MLB Pick Of The Day – Rockies @ Marlins – Run Totals Are Hot
Thursday, July 31st, 2008
FiveStarPick.com is hot on the totals in tonight’s Dolphin Stadium match-up between the Colorado Rockies and the Florida Marlins. Since becoming a major league expansion team, the Marlins have always been one of the surprise teams in the National League. Despite having no fan base and the smallest payroll in baseball ($22M), the Marlins are in a prime position to win their division and hopefully go deep into the playoffs with hot bats and a great pitching staff. Having said that, the small payroll might get a bit bigger after tonight’s game. Rumors are swirling out of control about the potential acquisition of slugger Manny Ramirez from Boston and the question remains can the Marlins stay focused as they open a 4-game series against the Colorado Rockies. If Manny comes aboard he will make as much as the entire Marlin’s roster combined.
In a highly criticized Marlins off-season trade move, Dontrelle Willis and leading run producer Miguel Cabrera were sent packing to clear additional room on their payroll and it worked. Willis was sent back to the minors and the Marlins starters have picked up the slack in run production. The Marlins (57-51) front office is proud of the work they have done creating wins using no-name talent.
Florida will start Anibal Sanchez (2-1, 4.80 ERA) tonight. This will be Sanchez’s first start since recovering from shoulder surgery 3 months ago. He lost to the Mets on May 2nd and he has never faced the sweet swinging bats of Colorado.
The Rockies (49-60) bats have been the catalyst in winning 10 of 13 games since the All-Star break and they will counter tonight with Jorge De La Rosa (5-5, 6.20) on the mound. De La Rosa has won back-to-back starts for the first time this season and only gave up 1 run in Saturday’s outing against the Cincinnati Reds. He’s 1-2 with an 8.64 ERA in four career games against the Marlins.
So that’s a lot of useless information I just gave you…or is it? Does the ‘run total’ go over or under in tonight’s match-up. FiveStarPick.com has the answer, but nothing is free in this world. If it was, it wouldn’t be worth anything.
