College Football Pick Of The Day – FAU @ Middle Tennesee – Who Covers The Spread

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Tuesday Night College Football is back with the defending Sun Belt Champion Florida Atlantic Owls on the road playing the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders.  FAU was supposed to take a big step up this season in its overall play, but after losing to Texas, Michigan State and Minnesota by a combined score of 106 to 13, the program showed it still has a long way to go. However, it’s all Sun Belt the rest of the way, and the pieces are still there to win a second straight title.  Middle Tennessee is in a spoiler role and it’s not even October. The Blue Raiders were good enough to beat Maryland and came within a shoestring tackle on a Hail Mary of beating Kentucky, but losses to Troy and Arkansas State have ruined their Sun Belt season. Even so, beating FAU would be a major feather in the team’s cap.

Middle Tennessee hasn’t faced much of a passing game so far and it still hasn’t come up with any pass defense. Little pass rush has meant the secondary has had to fend for itself, and the results haven’t been pretty. FAU has an advanced passing game, even if it hasn’t shown it off too often, and the offensive line has been fantastic in pass protection.

The Owl defense has struggled to force mistakes and has had major problems against the run. If the mediocre Blue Raider ground game is ever going to get rolling this would be the week.  The FAU defensive front has been shoved all over the place and Middle Tennessee really can run, it just hasn’t done it too much behind a lousy offensive line.

Rusty Smith has yet to break out. The reigning Sun Belt Player of the Year hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in his last two games and he’s coming off a horrific four-pick game against Minnesota. He hasn’t been accurate, he’s forced things even when he gets time and he hasn’t had shown the same zip or magic he had last year.

There will be plenty of home runs. The quickness of the FAU defense will keep the Middle Tennessee speedsters bottled up for stretches, and then the big plays will come. The Blue Raider defense isn’t struggling as much as the FAU offense, but while Rusty Smith will have his breakout game, so will the Middle Tennessee running game.

Monday Night Football Pick Of The Day – Ravens @ Steelers – Who Covers The Spread

Monday, September 29th, 2008

FiveStarPick.com is hot on tonight’s Monday Night Football game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Las Vegas sportsbooks opened the Steelers as 7-point favorites with the total set at 36. But now RB Willie Parker is “out” with a sprained left knee and Big Ben is questionable so the line has adjusted to 5 with the total dropping to 34.

Baltimore (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) is coming off a solid win against Cleveland as a 2-point favorite. The Ravens were down 10-7 at halftime, then scored 21 unanswered in the 3rd quarter.  Le’Ron McClain ran for 2 TDs and old Ed Reed had a pick-6.  Baltimore’s defense swarmed QB Derek Anderson the entire game recording 5 sacks and forcing 3 INTs.

Pittsburgh (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) lost to Philadelphia last week as a 3.5-point dog. The Eagles defense stopped the run and held the Steelers offense to just 33 rushing yards.  When Pittsburgh decided to start passing the ball, the offensive line couldn’t protect Ben Roethlisberger.  Ben was sacked 8 times and left the game with a bum hand.  He’s listed as probable for tonight’s game, but won’t be getting much relief from the Ravens D.  Ben will definately be feeling some pressure.  With Parker out of the lineup, rookie RB Rashard Mendenhall will get the start.  He has carried the ball 10 times for just 28 yards, but the rookie seems to be prone to fumbling the ball.

One last thing…Baltimore is 4-1 straight up in their last 5 head-to-head meetings with Pittsburgh.

NFL Pick Of The Day – Redskins @ Cowboys – Who Covers The Spread

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

FiveStarPick.com is fired up about today.  As a matter of fact, we are so fired up that we are giving our members an unprecedented eight (8) plays today.  The subject of our FiveStarPick of the day is this afternoon’s matchup between the Redskins and the Cowboys.

Las Vegas sportsbooks opened the line at 8 with the total set at 46.5.  Bettors from around the world have moved so much money on the Cowboys this week that the line has chased all the way to 12.

Dallas has not covered the spread in its last four home games against NFC East rivals.  Washington is 2-2 straight up in the division, but 3-1 against the spread in those contests.  The under went 3-1 as well, so take that for whatever its worth; And how about this…the Cowboys are 1-5 ATS in their last six matches against Washington.

College Football Pick Of The Day – UConn @ Louisville – Who Covers The Spread

Friday, September 26th, 2008

FiveStarPick.com has been crunching stats, trends, injury reports and weather forcasts all night and plans to give its members the winner and total for tonight’s game between the UConn Huskies and the Louisville Cardinals.  Connecticut (4-0 straight up, 1-2 against the spread) will return to the national stage tonight on the road having almost lost to Baylor last Friday and failing to cover in their 2nd game in 3 starts.  The over for UConn this season is a solid 3-0-1.

Louisville (2-1 straight up, 1-1 against the spread) started the year losing at home to Kentucky as a 4 point favorite 27-2.  That loss lit a fire under the Cardinals respondeing favorably with back-to-back victories. The Cardinals crushed Tennessee Tech 51-10, then beat Kansas State 38-29 last Wednesday as a 6 point home dog. The combined 67 points cashed over players on the 56-point total.

Las Vegas sportsbooks opened Louisville as a 2 ½-point favorite with the total set at 53. The line has been moving and most spots have adjusted the Cardinals to 3 ½ and the total has moved to 50.

College Football Pick Of The Day – USC @ Oregon State – Who Covers The Spread

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Anytime USC plays in front of a nationally televised audience it’s big news.  It’s big news for fans, big news for the media and big news for gamblers.  Tonight the USC Trojans will try to remain unbeaten as they go on the road to play Oregon State.  Most sportbooks opened the line at 21 with the total set at 50, but the betting public has moved the line up to 27 and some feel it might hit 27.5 to 28 by game-time.

In 2006, Oregon State played spoiler to a #3 USC team beating them 33-31 and thus ruining their hopes for another national title.  The Beavers dominated on special teams forcing 4 turnovers and converting those turnovers into points.  Turnovers, in our opinion, will be Oregon State’s only chance tonight.

USC is lead by the surprising good play of QB Mark Sanchez.  It’s not whether or not Sanchez is a good QB, it’s that the critics weren’t sure that Sanchez could live up to the accomplishments of his two predecessors (Palmer-Leinart) who were both Heisman winners.  Sanchez was named Pac-10 offensive player of the week in both of his outings this season posting a 166.6 passer rating, completing 43-63, 510 yards, 7 TDs and 0 INTs.  The running back position for USC is also stacked with Joe McKnight (18 rushes/165 yards), C.J. Gable (13 rushes/91 yards), Allen Bradford (14 rushes/57 yards) and Stafon Johnson (13 rushes/51 yards) accounting for a total of 364 yards of offense in their two games.

What’s staggering is that this team is equally as good on defense.  LB’s Maualuga and Cushing sit behind a defensive line that includes DE’s Kyle Moore and Everson Griffen and tackles Averell Spicer and Fili Moala…all potential All-Americans.

The Beavers are definately going to have their hands full tonight, but to have a chance, starting QB Lyle Moevao is going to have to pull out all the stops and play like he has nothing to lose.  WR’s Shane Morales and Sammie Stroughter will be Moevao’s primary weapons, but Moevao might not have enough time in the pocket to get his receivers open.  Regardless…it should be fun to watch.
