Motor City Bowl Picks – Central Michigan vs. FAU – Who Covers The Spread

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

FiveStarPick.com looks forward to another bowl win tonight as we give you the winner of the Motor City Bowl between the Chippewas of Central Michigan and the Owls of FAU.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list Central Michigan (8-4 straight up, 6-5 against the spread) as a 6.5-point favorite with the total set at 63.

After starting the season 1-5, Florida Atlantic (6-6 SU, 7-5 ATS) won five of its last six games to become bowl eligible. In addition, the Owls were 4-2 ATS in their 6 games.  FAU’s last game was a 57-50 home win over FIU as 5 ½-point favorites. FAU quarterback Rusty Smith threw for 389 yards and 5 touchdowns. Cortez Gent had 7 receptions for 108 yards and 3 TDs, while Jamari Grant caught 7 balls for 80 yards and a pair of TDs.

Central Michigan was playing great football…as a matter of fact, they took a six-game winning streak into a game with then undefeated Ball State.  The Chippewas fought hard, but eventually lost 31-24 and fell out of MAC championship contention.  CMU then lost its regular-season finale 56-52 at Eastern Michigan as 10-point home underdogs.  Junior quarterback Dan LeFevour threw 4 touchdown passes and ran for another, while wide receiver Antonio Brown had seven receptions for 172 yards and one TD.

This is the second straight bowl game for FAU in only 8 seasons as a football program.  The Owls enjoyed their breakout season in 2007, winning the Sun Belt Conference and beating Memphis 44-27 as 3-point favorites in the New Orleans Bowl.  The Owls have been underdogs 6 times this season, posting a 2-4 ATS record.

So who covers the spread in tonight’s game?  FiveStarPick.com is here to help. Aren’t you tired of getting cold called by services that tell you about their 750,000 star play that’s a guaranteed winner. Here is a bit of advice…NOTHING is guaranteed when you are betting on sports.  These so called “handicappers” call 500 people a day and give them all a free play; 250 people will get FAU +6.5 and 250 will get CMU -6.5.  After the game ends, they call back the 250 people who won and pitch them on charging thousands of dollars to their credit cards for more guaranteed winners.   We are not your typical sports handicapping service.  We care about our members and we live and die on every play. Why?  Because we are moving thousands of dollars of our own money on the same plays we give you. Gambling on sports is how we make our living.  Do we win every play?  Absolutely not and we will never pretend to.  Our plays are always posted for all to see, including our losing streaks. But by the end of the year we always seem to have a few hundred thousand dollars of the sportsbook’s money in our casino account.  Let us try and do the same for you.  Join our family of winners today and start your winning streak tonight.

Hawaii Bowl Picks – Notre Dame vs. Hawaii – Who Covers The Spread

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

FiveStarPick.com is looking forward to another bowl win tonight as we give our members the winner of the Notre Dame – Hawaii matchup in the Hawaii Bowl.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Irish as 1.5-point favorites with the total set at 48.

These two programs have really struggled over the last few years since graduating their stud starting quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Colt Brennan.  Both schools offensive numbers have been on a steady decline, however, a victory in this bowl game may put a few of their issues to rest and help tremendously in recruiting efforts.  The Warriors (7-6 SU, 5-4 ATS) will basically have a home game as well as the chance to beat one of the highest profile programs in the country.  Warrior backup QB Greg Alexander has led them to a 4-2 record since being inserted into the leading role.

The Fighting Irish (6-6 SU, 6-6 ATS) have had little success as of late, after starting the season 4-1, the Irish finished the season 2-5 and questions are now being raised as to whether Charlie Weiss will be around for much longer. The Irish have had a number of key injuries this year but will have their star freshman WR Michael Floyd back in action for this game. The Irish look to end a nation high 9 game bowl losing streak.  The Fighting Irish have not shown any consistency as of late and this game might not be much different.  The Warriors, on the other hand, have been playing good football and had the Big East champion on the ropes in the season finale only to let the game slip away.  Unfortunately turnovers will decide this game.

Poinsettia Bowl Picks – TCU vs. Boise State – Who Covers The Spread

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

FiveStarPick.com is looking forward to winning another bowl game tonight as we give our members the winner of the Poinsettia Bowl featuring the No. 9 Broncos of Boise State and No. 11 Horned Frogs of TCU at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California.  Las Vegas sports books list TCU as 2.5-point favorites with the total set at 46.

After winning the best College Football Bowl Game ever, the Mustangs can no longer fly under the radar.  The trick-play filled Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma to cap off an undefeated season will go down in history as legend and replays will be on ESPN forever.  Unfortunately for the Broncos, Utah also went 12-0 during the year to garner the automatic bid for the “mid-major” conference to a BCS bowl this season.

Boise State currently averages 456.8 yards per game on offense this year, 13th in the nation overall.  The defenses they have faced, however, are another story.  These defenses average around 71st in the nation.  Regardless, Boise State’s talent is deep, especially in the backfield.  Ian Johnson led the offense with 738 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.  Tandem RB Jeremy Avery gained 613 yards on the ground and reached the endzone 4 times.  Take into account the poise of Bronco QB Kellen Moore under center along with 9 receivers having with at least 10 catches in 2008 and you got yourself an offense.  Moore’s favorite target is Junior WR Jeremy Childs who caught 65 passes for 741 yards and 7 touchdowns this season.

The Horned Frogs of TCU have one of the nation’s best defenses.  TCU is second only to Southern California in scoring defense (10.9 points per game) and overall defense (215.1 YPG).  Texas Christian has only allowed 48.7 YPG on the ground and has an average of 7.8 tackles for a loss in each game.

But this team isn’t all defense, the offense is averaging 417.1 YPG.  The rushing tandem of Aaron Brown and Joseph Turner has helped Texas Christian gain 215.7 YPG on the ground this season.   In the air, QB Andy Dalton has completed 58.8 percent of his passes this year for 2,045 yards.  Dalton was able to keep his mistakes to a minimum as his TD-to-INT was only 11:4.   Dalton’s top receiver has been Jimmy Young, grabbing 54 passes for 926 yards and five scores.

New Orleans Bowl Picks – Troy vs. Southern Mississippi – Who Covers The Spread

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

It’s bowl season and FiveStarPick.com looks to hit another hot streak of wins.  Today we find a winner in the New Orleans Bowl when the Troy State Trojans look to continue their winning ways against the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Golden Eagles as 4.5-point favorites with the total set at 55.

This year Troy State (8-4 SU, 7-4 ATS) celebrated its first outright Sun Belt Conference title, but their season could have been even better if not for a pair of heartbreaking losses to Louisian-Monroe and LSU. Troy won eight games this season for the second year in a row and went 6-1 in their conference, wrapping up the title with a 35-9 win over Arkansas State on Dec. 6.  Two weeks earlier, the Trojans crushed the Louisiana Lafayette, 48-3.  Their most heartbreaking loss was in Baton Rouge when the Trojans jumped out to a 31-3 lead over LSU, but the Tigers scored 37 unanswered points in the game’s final 16 minutes to win 40-31.

Southern Miss (6-6 SU, 7-5 ATS) was 2-6 at the end of October. The Golden Eagles had lost five straight games and their defense was the reason, allowing 35.8 points per game during the losing streak.  In their last four games, however, Southern Miss allowed only 35 points in total. The Eagles used a 21-3 win over East Carolina on Nov. 15 as the catalyst to become bowl eligible.  Icing on the cake came in their final game, a 28-12 victory at SMU.

Opponents ran at the Trojans an average of 40.1 times per game but gained 3.5 yards per carry, giving them the 26th-best rush defense per carry in the nation.  Both teams are led by solid quarterbacks who limit their mistakes. Southern Miss freshman Austin Davis threw for 2,852 yards with 21 touchdowns, and had only five interceptions in his last 10 games.  Junior Levin Brown didn’t start the season as Troy’s quarterback, but he stepped in when starter Jaime Hampton was lost for the season against Florida Atlantic on Oct. 7. Hampton had thrown eight interceptions in five games, but Brown was picked off only three times in seven starts while tossing 14 touchdown passes.

So who covers the spread in today’s game?  Why not let FiveStarPick.com get rid of the guesswork.  For only $99 a month you will get a professional team of handicappers behind you that give you daily plays that beat the spread and get results.  Please note that it is impossible to win every game, but if you only bet our daily plays you will come out way ahead for the year.  We are 120 games over .500 this year, so join today and start winning tonight!

NBA Basketball Picks – Lakers @ Heat – Who Covers The Spread

Friday, December 19th, 2008

FiveStarPick.com is excited about the next few weeks as bowl season and the NFL Playoffs begin, but tonight we will aim our focus on the NBA Friday night basketball game between the LA Lakers and the Miami Heat.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Lakers as 7.5-road favorites with the total set at 205.

Even with two of their top players feeling ill, the Lakers still find a way to keep winning.  Tonight, they open a four-game eastern road trip against a Miami Heat club that’s lost three in a row. Los Angeles (21-3 Straight Up, 11-12-1 Against The Spread) is looking for its 5th straight victory and 15th in 17 games following Tuesday night’s 116-114 home win over the New York Knicks.

Despite an upper respiratory infection, Lamar Odom recorded season highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Odom was making his first start of 2008-09 in place of Paul Gasol, who was sent home Tuesday night with strep throat.  Odom, who averaged 17.1 points, 9.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists with Miami in 2003-04, practiced Wednesday and is expected to play Friday.  That’s good news for Los Angeles, as Odom is averaging 13.3 points, 15.0 boards and 5.7 assists in three games in Miami with the Lakers. He had 15 points, 18 rebounds and six assists in a 104-94 win at AmericanAirlines Arena on Feb. 10.  Gasol didn’t practice Wednesday and is questionable for Friday. Tuesday was his first missed game since being sidelined for nine games with a sprained left ankle from March 16-30.  After shooting 39.7 percent over his previous six games, Kobe Bryant went 12-of-22 from the field against the Knicks and scored 28 points – nine in the final 7:33 of play.

Dwayne Wade and the Miami Heat haven’t enjoyed too many of those over the past week.  Miami (12-12 SU, 8-15-1 ATS) lost its third straight Monday night, 98-83 to Milwaukee as Wade missed 11 of 16 shots and finished with 15 points.  Wade averaged 34.8 points and hit 50.5 percent from the field during a four-game winning streak from Dec. 1-8, but is averaging 17.7 points and 33.9 percent shooting during the three-game slide.  Wade leads the league with 28.0 points per game. He averaged 18.5 in two losses to the Lakers last season, though.
