NBA Basketball Picks – Magic @ 76ers – Who Covers The Spread

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com is starting to heat up…Finally!  Now winning 7 of our last 9, we look to continue the trend by giving our members 3 ATS winners today.  The focus of today’s preview is the matchup between the Orlando Magic and the Philadelphia 76ers.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Magic as 2-point road favorites with the total set at 197.

The Orlando Magic acquired point guard Rafer Alston at the trade deadline to help reclaim their status in the Eastern Conference, but it is obvious that the team really misses All-Star Jameer Nelson.  Orlando (42-16 SU, 37-21 ATS) was crushing opponents before Nelson left the game against Dallas on February 2nd with a season ending shoulder injury and since have had a lacluster 6-6 straight up run.

In recent meetings with Philadelphia (29-28 SU, 27-28 ATS), the Magic have won seven of eight, including their first two matchups earlier this season.  The Sixers have won consecutive games after dropping their first four following the All-Star break.  The Sixers have managed to somehow contain Magic center Dwight Howard, but this is the teams’ first matchup since Elton Brand was shut down for the season with a shoulder injury.

College Basketball Pick Of The Day – Miami @ Virginia – Who Covers The Spread

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com will be giving its members 5 plays today in both professional golf and college basketball.  The focus of today’s preview is the ACC Basketball matchup between the Miami Hurricanes and the Virginia Cavaliers.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Canes as 3.5-point favorites with the total hovering around 160.

Thursday marks the ninth meeting between Miami and Virginia, with the Hurricanes leading the all-time series, 5-3. Miami has won two straight over Virginia, including a 95-93 victory in their last meeting in Coral Gables on March 1, 2008.

In that meeting, McClinton knocked down seven three-pointers en route to 34 points, while Jimmy Graham scored a career-high 19 points (7-10 FGs, 5-9 FTs) and Lance Hurdle added 10 points — including a key trey with 9.2 seconds remaining.

Virginia — who has one of the league’s top freshmen in Sylven Landesberg (18.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg) — has won two of its last three games, defeating both Clemson (85-81 OT) and Virginia Tech (75-61) at home.  Miami’s strength of schedule is ranked NINTH in the country and third in the ACC. The Hurricanes have played five games versus teams that have been ranked No.1 this season and have played four of the five teams that have been atop the polls in 2008-09 — UConn, North Carolina, Wake Forest and Duke. Pitt is the only team that has reached the top spot this season that Miami is not scheduled to face.

The Hurricanes have five wins versus the nation’s top 60 in the RPI  – with a 27-point victory over Wake Forest, a series sweep of Boston College and splits with Florida State and Maryland. In addition, the Hurricanes won at Kentucky and at St. John’s. Their only non-conference losses are to Connecticut in the Virgin Islands and to Ohio State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

College Basketball Pick Of The Day – Kansas @ Oklahoma – Who Covers The Spread

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

We have had over a thousand member emails this week expressing extreme frustration with our performace this year and believe me, we hear you.  Even though we are still 7 games above .500, it has been an off year for us so far and we know that you pay a membership fee for one reason and one reason only…to win!  Our living is made every year wagering on the same games we give our members and these first two months have been unprecedented.  But this is not the time to panic.  Our fundementals are strong and our system is tested.  Injury, overtimes and trend busters have accounted for many of our losses this year, but we are not here to make excuses.  We know that if we don’t win for you, you will find someone else who can.  Thank you…Now on to today’s preview.

Kansas (22-5 SU, 15-5-1 ATS) has gone 11-1 in conference games and has tied OU for first place. The Jayhawks are coming off of a solid 70-53 win over Nebraska as 12-point home favorites.  Sherron Collins scored 22 points and Cole Aldrich had 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Oklahoma (25-2 SU, 12-9-1 ATS) couldn’t beat the Longhorns last week as a one-point road favorite and a big reason was the loss of Blake Griffin to a concussion during the first half.   Texas’ A.J. Abrams took advantage of Griffin’s absence and scored 16 straight points in the final 8 minutes to seal the victory.

Griffin is out tonight and bettors will be pounding Kansas.  But Oklahoma has dominated its home court this season by going 15-0 SU.  The Jayhawks have also faired well this year for bettors going 15-5-1 ATS and they are 6-0 ATS when on the road in Big XII play.

NBA Basketball Pick Of The Day – Heat @ Magic – Who Covers The Spread

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Man…Blake Griffin’s concussion last night was the icing on a very tumultuous week for FiveStarPick.com, but we are looking forward to a few wins on the board today.  The focus of today’s preview is the in-state rivalry between the Miami Heat and the Orlando Magic.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list Orlando as a 9-point home favorite over Miami, with the total hovering around 191.

Miami (29-25 SU, 25-28 ATS) is coming off a 6-point victory against Philadelphia yesterday as a 3.5-point home favorite, 97-91. The combined 188 points pushed the closing total for bettors.  The Heat lost the rebounding battle to the Sixers, 42-38, but hit 51-percent of their shots from the field (38-of-74) including 25 points and nine assists from DWade.  Center Jermaine O’Neal is now finding his way by adding 17 points with 10 rebounds.  Miami is 11-15 SU and 13-12 ATS on the road this year and have lost their road games by an average score of 100-97.

Orlando (40-14 SU, 34-19 ATS) is coming off a win in Charlotte last Friday night as a 2-point road favorite, 92-80.  The Magic had lost three games in a row ATS before covering against the Bobcats. The combined 172 points went Under the 188-point closing total.  Orlando also got out-rebounded by their opponent, 45-42, but shot 43 percent (31-of-73) from the field to hold on to victory. Forward Hedo Turkoglu was the high scorer for the Magic with 24 points, while center Dwight Howard added 13 points and 16 boards.

Now let’s talk trends…The Magic are 21-6 SU and 16-11 ATS at home, with the ‘over’ going 16-11.  Miami had lost nine games in a row to Orlando SU (1-7-1 ATS) before beating the Magic January 24th as a 7.5-point home underdog, 103-97.

College Basketball Pick Of The Day – Oklahoma @ Texas – Who Covers The Spread

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

FiveStarPick.com will be giving it’s members 5 plays today in college basketball.  The focus of this preview is the 9:00 PM EDT tip off between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns.  Las Vegas sportsbooks have opened Texas (17-8 SU, 9-13 ATS) as a 1.5-point favorite with a total set at 142.

Oklahoma (25-1 SU, 12-8-1 ATS) has won 13 in a row since its loss to Arkansas.  The Sooners are 8-3 ATS in that stretch.  The Sooners last game ended with a 95-74 win over Oklahoma St. as 16-point home favorites.  Blake Griffin had his 22nd double-double of the year with 40 points and 23 rebounds…both career highs.   Griffin should be the favorite for National Player of the Year honors as he averages 22.8 points a game and leads the nation in rebounding with 14.2 boards per game.

Texas has won 10 of its 13 home games at home.  However, the Longhorns are just 3-7 ATS in those games.  As a matter of fact, the Horns just are 1-3 ATS as single-digit home favorites.  The Longhorns have lost four of their last six games, going 1-5 ATS.  They lost on the road to Texas A&M, 81-66, as two-point road favorites.   Texas’ leading scorer, A.J. Abrams, scored only 7 points on 3-of-12 shooting.  Abrams typically averages 16.8 PPG.

Oklahoma has won outright in both previous games as an underdog this season.  OU beat Purdue 87-82 at Madison Square Garden as a two-point dog. The Sooners also won a 61-53 decision at Kansas St. as 1 ½-point dogs.
