King James finished with 41 points in the Game 3 loss, but neither LeBron (1-of-8) or his teammates (4-of-18) could hit anything from behind the arc.  The Cavs (other than LeBron) have got to step up and make shots if they want any chance of making it to this year’s Finals.  Mo Williams finished Game 3 going just 5-of-16 from the floor and is a dismal 25% from 3-land.  To make things worse, the first-year All-Star caught a nasty elbow from Orlando’s Anthony Johnson that left him bleeding from the head.

It’s obvious that the public and the NBA want to see the Lakers and Cavaliers meet in the NBA Finals.  With that being said, the fouls in Game 3 were questionable at best and you could make the argument that the refs were leaning hard towards LeBron and the Cavs.  Officials called 58 fouls resulting in 86 free throws in 48 minutes…that is a lot of whistle blowing.

The Magic have covered eight straight and they are 13-1 against the spreaad in their last 14 meetings with Cleveland.  Orlando has lost two games at home in the playoffs on buzzer-beaters.  One trend favoring Cleveland is how the team responds coming off a loss.  This year, the Cavs have gone 14-2 SU and 13-3 against the spread after a defeat and that includes Game 2’s comeback win at home against Orlando.

The Lakers took Game 3 after Kobe Bryant drilled a clutch 3-pointer from the corner late in the game.  Kobe finished with 41 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter.  The Lakers covered as 3 ½-point underdogs.  The Nuggets looked like they were going to pull away in the second-half but were outscored 32-18 by the Lakers in the fourth quarter.   Ariza added 16 points including some big 3-pointers down the stretch and Pau Gasol was also in double digits with 20 points and 11 boards.

While Bryant did his thing for the Lakers, the Nuggets’ superstars Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups failed to bring it in Game 3.  They combined for 9-of-28 (32%) shooting from the field and 3-of-14 (21%) from beyond the arc.  Anthony finished with 21 points but only 3 came in the second half, all from the free throw line.  Billups added 18 and seven assists.

With the win last Saturday, Los Angeles improved its record as a road underdog to 8-2 against the spread in the playoffs.  Also, the Lakers have now captured seven straight road playoff wins in Denver.   The loss for Denver snapped a 16-game home winning streak for the club.  In the playoffs, Denver was 6-0 both SU and against the spread in the New Orleans and Dallas series.  The Nuggets have yet to suffer back-to-back losses at home this year.

The under is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings between these clubs, including a 3-0 in this series. The Lakers have seen the under go 11-5 this postseason, which includes seven straight unders.

While Cleveland has relied heavily on LeBron, the Magic have three scorers to rely on with Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu. Turkoglu finished with 21 points in Game 2 and almost stole the show after his last shot gave the Cavs a 95-93 lead.

After going 7-1 against the spread and winning every contest by double digits in their first eight playoff games, Cleveland has failed to cover in their last two.  For the first time in a long while, the Cavs are underdogs in a playoff game.

Now let’s talk trends…Cleveland dominated the Pistons and Hawks in the first two playoff rounds on the road, which produced a 4-0 SU and 3-1 against the spread record, only failing to cover the spread by a point in Game 4 in Atlanta.  Orlando has gone 4-2 both SU and against the spread at home in the playoffs, losing both games on buzzer beaters.  Cleveland owns a record of 4-6 against the spread as a road underdog in this year’s playoffs, while Orlando is 10-4 against the spread as a home favorite of six points or less.

After choking in Game 1, the Nuggets bounced back to win Game 2 in Los Angeles, 106-103. The Nuggets tied the series at 1 game a piece by winning outright as 5.5-point dogs.  Carmelo Anthony is rocking the Lakers this series scoring 34 points and grabbing 9 rebounds in Game 2.  Chauncey Billups added 27 points and four assists with only one turnover, while Kenyon Martin finished with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor.

The Lakers jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first half, only to allow the Nuggets to rally and trim their deficit to just one at halftime. The Lakers were up 7 by the middle of the third quarter, but that was the largest lead they could muster before the Nuggets made a run.  Kobe Bryant tied the game in the 4th, 101-101, when he buried a fadeaway jumper with 49 seconds remaining. On the next possession, Nene made a nice pass under the basket to Kenyon Martin whose bucket put the Nuggets back in front at the 32-second mark.

A few moments later, Pau Gasol hit a pair of freethrows to make it 105-103, but with four ticks left, Billups made just one of two at the line to give the Lakers a chance to tie.  Derek Fisher had one last chance for the win with a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it was no good.

Now let’s talk trends…Denver is 39-8 SU and a 29-17-1 against the spread at the Pepsi Center. In fact, they are now 11-0-1 against the spread in the postseason.  In six home games during the playoffs, the Nuggets are 6-0 both SU and against the spread, winning each by 12 points or more.

Orlando rallied from a 15-point defecit at halftime to win Game 1 in Cleveland, 107-106.  Veteran forward Rashard Lewis hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to seal the victory.  Mo Williams had a last second chance to answer at the buzzer after a jump ball, but missed allowing the Magic to take a 1-0 series lead. 

For the Magic, Dwight Howard was in All-Star from with 30 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out in the final minute. Lewis added 22 points and grabbed seven boards, knocking down 9-of-13 attempts from the field.

On the other side of the floor, King James dropped 49 points, eight assists, six rebounds, three blocked shots and a pair of steals on the Magic in the loss. His 3-point play put the Cavs in front 106-104 with 26 seconds remaining, but Rashard Lewis stole his thunder with his 3-point bomb at the other end of the court. 

The victory was Orlando’s third over the Cavs in four head-to-head meetings this season.  Mike Brown’s team is going to have to make a number of defensive adjustments if they want to win Game 2.  Lewis is too quick off the dribble for Anderson Varejao and Brown might have to use James to guard Lewis or Turkoglu, an option he doesn’t want to fall back to because he wants James to save his energy for the offensive end and continue to play great defense when leaving his man to help.
