Packers @ Bears – Monday Night Football Picks Against The Spread

Monday, September 27th, 2010

The pros at FiveStarPick are excited about tonight’s Monday Night Football plays as the Green Bay Packers lace em up on the road at the Chicago Bears.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Packers as 3-point road favorties with a total of 46.5.  We think this line is DEAD WRONG.

Eight teams entered Week 3 with 2-0 records and four of them were handed losses on Sunday. Tonight from Soldier Field, one more club will join that group as Chicago (1-1 against the spread) welcomes their rival Green Bay (2-0 Against The Spread) in a NFC North battle.

The Bears received a questionable win over Detroit (19-14) in Week 1 when Calvin Johnson’s late score for the Lions was reversed. Despite the lucky victory, Chicago went on the road the very next week and stunned Dallas 27-20 as a seven-point underdog. Bears quarterback Jay Cutler (649 yards, 5 TDs) seems more relaxed so far and he only has one interception through two games, after tossing 26 last year.

Defensively, Smith’s squad has also looked sharp. The unit has only allowed 289 YPG and they’ve forced six turnovers. With all due respect to the Lions and Cowboys, the Packers’ offense is averaging a league best 30.5 points per game and will be a much bigger test for the Bears tonight. Chicago picked up defensive end Julius Peppers in the offseason to bolster its pass rush but the defense only has two sacks after two games.

Underdogs posted a 10-5 Against The Spread record on Sunday and that included outright home ‘dog wins by Kansas City (+3), St. Louis (+4.5) and Seattle (+4).

Can Chicago join the mix and improve to 3-0 like Pittsburgh and Kansas City? Or will the Bears get exposed and look like the Texans and Buccaneers did yesterday? We’d include the Saints and Dolphins in that mix, but the pair played decent plus they lost to legit teams in the Falcons and Jets respectively.

While those numbers are telling, keep in mind that Chicago has played well on MNF under Lovie, going 4-1 in five appearances. Plus, the Packers are just 3-8 in their last 11 under the MNF lights.

The total for tonight is hovering between 45 and 46 and like most other primetime affairs, bettors should expect it to rise by kickoff. Green Bay has shown that it can score (34, 27) this season, but the ‘under’ has still produced a 2-0 mark. The Bears have a 1-1 total record.

Green Bay has gone 3-1 SU and 4-0 ATS in its last four meetings against Chicago, which includes last year’s sweep (21-14, 21-15). All four games went ‘under’ the number. It should also be noted that Rodgers has been the starting QB for the Packers in all four of these affairs and ironically the lone loss (17-20, OT) came in 2008 at Soldier Field, which was on a Monday as well.

Alabama @ Arkansas – College Football Picks Against The Spread

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

Congratulations to all our members on another solid win last night in college football as the SMU Mustangs held on to cover the 18-point spread by 1-point over the TCU Horned Frogs 41-24. Tonight, the pros at FivStarPick.com have been crunching stats, trends, key matchups and injury reports to give our members another winner tonight in college football.  The Alabama Crimson Tide are favored by 7- points on the road over the Arkansas Razorbacks. This line is DEAD WRONG!

Alabama (3-0 straight up, 3-0 against the spread) has won 27 straight regular-season games going into tonight’s SEC West rivalry against Arkansas.

The Razorbacks, under Bobby Petrino, hope that their 3-0 SU, 1-1 Against The Spread team can produce one of the biggest wins in school history against the number one team in the country.

The Tide has been blowing out teams so far this seaon with wins over San Jose St. (48-3), Penn St. (24-3) and Duke (62-13).  Their first two wins were without reigning Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram.  When Ingram returned last week at Duke, he busted a 48-yard run on his first touch. Ingram eventually finished with nine carries for 151 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Duke.

Arkansas beat up on Tennessee Tech and UL Monroe at home before going on the road to face the Georgia Bulldogs last week. The Hogs jumped out to a 24-10 lead, only to watch the Georgia tie it up late in the fourth quarter. UGA actually had a chance to go ahead before their drive stalled near midfield with a minute remaining.  Georgia punted and Razorback QB Ryan Mallett found Greg Childs streaking down the left sideline for a 40-yard pass to give Arkansas a 31-24 win as a one-point road dog.

Mallett has completed 70 percent of his passes this year for 1,081 yards with a 9/2 touchdown-to-interception ratio.  McElroy, the Tide signal caller, has connected on 71.7 percent of his attempts for 705 yards with a 6/1 TD-INT ratio.

Both QBs have big weapons.  The Hogs’ have D.J. Williams, one of the nation’s premier tight ends with 14 catches for 173 yards.  The Tide has junior WR Julio Jones, who has 15 receptions for 248 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jones averages 16.5 yards per catch.

When these schools met last season, McElroy threw for 291 yards and three TDs to lead the Tide to a 35-7 victory as a 17.5-point home favorite.

TCU @ SMU – College Football Picks Against The Spread

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Congratulations to all our members on a blow-out win last night in college football as the Miami Hurricanes crushed the Pitt Panthers 31-3.  Tonight, the pros at FivStarPick.com have been crunching stats, trends, key matchups and injury reports to give our members another winner tonight in college football.  The Horned Frogs of TCU are favored by 17.5 points on the road over the SMU Mustangs with a total of 55 points. This line is DEAD WRONG!

SMU (2-1 SU, 2-1 Against The Spread) opened the season with a 35-27 loss at Texas Tech, but the Mustangs cashed a ticket as 13-point road dogs. Since that loss, SMU has won two straight games, including a 28-7 win over UAB in Week 2. SMU took the cash against the Blazers as an 11.5-point home favorite.  Running Back Zach Line ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns, while QB Kyle Padron threw for 145 yards, two TD’s and no interceptions.

In Week 3, SMU failed to cover the 24-point home spread against Washington State. Padron connected on 19-of-34 passes for 280 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, while Aldrick Robinson had four receptions for 111 yards and three TDs.

Texas Christian (3-0 straight up, 1-1 against the spread) opened the season at Cowboys Stadium, beating Oregon St. 30-21 as a 13.5-point favorite. The Horned Frogs gained 453 yards compared to the 255 yards gained by the Beavers. TCU quarterback Andy Dalton threw two picks, but he did rush for a pair of scores, while throwing a TD pass to Jeremy Kerley. Ed Wesley gained 134 yards on 17 carries with 1 touchdown.

For the season, Dalton has completed 74.6 percent of his throws for 624 yards with a 4/2 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He also has three rushing TDs.  Top wideout Kerley has 13 catches for 134 yards and three TDs including one on the ground.

Since throwing three interceptions in the season-opening loss at Texas Tech, SMU’s Padron has been sensational. In the last two games, he has six TD passes without a pick to improve his TD/INT ratio to 8/3 for the year.

In last year’s meeting, SMU led 7-0 in the second quarter before giving up 25 unanswered points. The Horned Frogs eventually came away with a 39-14 win that wasn’t enough to cash a ticket as 28-point home favorites.

Miami (FL) @ Pittsburgh – College Football Picks Against The Spread

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

The pros at FivStarPick.com have been crunching stats, trends, key matchups and injury reports to give our members another winner tonight.  The Miami Hurricanes are favored by 3 points over the Pittsburgh Panthers with a total of 50 points.

Pittsburgh was the favorite to win the Big East in the preseason, but the Panthers opened on the road at Utah and it wasn’t good.  Maybe it was the altitude, maybe not.  The result was Pitt losing its national ranking (#15) and tailback Dion Lewis dropping out of the Heisman conversation to start the year.

It all started with the overtime loss at Utah to open the season; then a very uninspiring win over New Hampshire in which Lewis gained just 27 yards on 10 carries; then 2009 Big East co-defensive player of the year, Greg Romeus, will likely miss the rest of the season after having back surgery; and now running back Jason Douglas and offensive lineman Keith Coleman were suspended indefinitely after being arrested for a DUI and aggravated assault respectively.  Not a good start to the year.

Coach Randy Shannon is hoping his team to get his team headed back in the right direction after a big loss at Ohio State.  Miami squandered some big opportunities in their 36-24 defeat at OSU in which QB Jacory Harris was intercepted four times, a career-high for the junior.

The Panthers will look to Lewis, and his backup Ray Graham, to drive the offense but they will need help from QB Tino Sunseri who is starting just his third collegiate game .

If Jacory Harris can eliminate mistakes, and get the ball to WR’s Leonard Hankerson and LaRon Byrd, then Miami can pile up points at a fast clip. Already this season the Hurricanes have four touchdown drives that have lasted less than two minutes, including one against Ohio State.

Pittsburgh and Miami haven’t played since 2003, but the Hurricanes are on a six-game winning streak in this series. The Panthers are 1-10 against ranked, non-conference opponents since 1996.

Saints @ 49rs – Monday Night Fooball Picks Against The Spread

Monday, September 20th, 2010

The pros at FiveStarPick are coming off a 1-3 weekend for our membership in college and NFL football.  This is unacceptable to us.  Tonight we will right the ship with our Monday Night Football ’Total’ winner as the Superbowl Champion New Orleans Saints lace em up on the road at the San Francisco 49rs.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Saints as 5.5-point road favorties with a total of 43.5.  We think this line is DEAD WRONG.

The Saints are coming off a 14-9 victory over the Vikings in Week 1.  After last year’s NFC Title Game, many thought Minnesota was the better team.  Afterall, they outgained New Orleans by 218 yards in the overtime loss.   Last week, however, the New Orleans defense limited Minnesota to 253 yards, while controlling the ball for 33 minutes.

In the preseason, the Niners were the team to beat in the NFC West, but San Francisco got pounded at Seattle, 31-6 as three-point road favorites. Top draft pick Alex Smith has sucked on the road, as the Niners are 1-6 in his last seven road starts.  Smith has been great at home as is evident byt San Francisco finishing last season with four consecutive home victories with him under center.

The defense for Mike Singletary wasn’t bad last week, only allowing 244 yards to the Seahawks.  The offense is the root of San Francisco’s woes.   Running back Frank Gore was held to 38 yards on 17 carries. Smith threw two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.  The Niner’s goose was cooked.

The Saints got to play at home last week which was a bonus,  but New Orleans is average at best against the spread going 5-4 on the road last year.  Since 2006, New Orleans owns a profitable 10-4 Against The Spread record as a road favorite.

The Niners were a strong team to back last season with a 5-2-1 Against The Spread home record. San Francisco was listed as a home underdog only once as they upended the Cardinals, 24-9, last December as four-point ‘dogs on a Monday Night at Candlestick.  Under Singletary, San Francisco is 2-0 Against The Spread in Monday games, including a 29-24 loss at Arizona as a 10-point dog in 2008.

The Saints are 10-5 to the ‘over’ since 2007 in road games with the total listed at 49 or below. The Niners cashed the ‘under’ in six of eight home games last season, while scoring 24 points or less six times.
