In Sunday’s final round, Westwood will have to execute in the company of Mickelson, who thrilled the crowds Saturday by covering 13, 14 and 15 in 5-under par.  He became only the third player to record successive eagles when he holed out from 141 yards at the par-four 14th, his ball pitching six feet beyond the hole before rolling back down the slope into the cup.  Mickelson, who had knocked in a six-footer to eagle the par-five 13th, raised his arms skywards in disbelief as the crowd packed around the green roared its approval.

Woods, playing his first tournament in nearly five months after getting caught with his dong in the cookie jar was delighted to be in contention for a 15th major title.

The season’s final major starts today as the pros tee it up for the 91st PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.  Hazeltine has hosted its share of majors, the 1966 U.S. Women’s Open, 1970 U.S. Open, 1977 U.S. Women’s Open, 1983 U.S. Senior Open, 1991 U.S. Open and 2002 PGA Championship.  The last time the PGA Championship was held here in 2002 it was won by Rich Beem…his first and only major victory.

The course has changed since then. In 2002, the course’s total yardage was 7,360 yards.  This year, it has been lengthened to 7,674 yards which makes it the longest course in major championship history. Three of the par fives are over 600 yards while half of the four (4) par threes are now over 200 yards.

The runner-up to Beem in 2002 was none other than T-dub (Tiger Woods) whose late Sunday charge came up one shot short.  Tiger, obviously is the overwhelming favorite again this week (+150) and that really should come as no surprise to anyone.  He has won both events over the last two weeks and he is obviously playing some of his best golf of the year.  He certainly has the length to tame Hazeltine and he is probably the best putter in history.  Tiger will be seeking his fifth PGA Championship and we here at FiveStarPick.com will have a peice of him on the board this week. 

Hunter Mahan (+3000) might not be a bad play either.  His last start prior to Firestone was the Open Championship where he missed the cut, but the time off helped as he registered his fourth top six in his last five events. He has missed only two cuts this year and has six top tens.  At +3000 he is certainly worth a look.

Stewart Cink, the Open Champion, at +4000?  WTF?  After taking a couple weeks off, he came back with a T6 last week at Firestone. He does have only two other top tens on the year but his game is hot right now and he should not be overlooked.  He is hitting the ball further the last few years than at any other time in his career and he still one of the straightest drivers of the ball on tour.

Angel Cabrera, the current Masters Champion, is another surprise at +4000.  He is having an exceptional season winning the Masters in dramatic fashion over Kenny Perry and he was right in the thick of the Open Championship until a weekend mishap derailed his chances. He had a very quiet T4 last week at Firestone so he is playing at a high level now. He is ranked seventh on the PGA Tour in driving distance and that length will be beneficial at Hazeltine.

Every Major tournament starts and ends with Tiger Woods (+165). He now has 14 Major championships, but he missed the Open Championship last season.  In addition, this will be his first ever walk around the Turnberry track. He was at Stanford the last time the Open came to Turnberry.  That may not seem like a way to win here but Woods has won five Majors at courses that he was playing competitively for the first time.

Two-time defending champion Padraig Harrington (+2200) will be a favorite for mant Europeans this week, but Harrington has missed the cut in eight of his last 14 starts, including five in a row.  Harrington decided to change his swing after winning his 3rd major becasue he felt his position at impact needed improvement.  Yikes…Dude, don’t tinker with your swing.

When will Sergio (+2000) finally break through for a Major championship?  Many thought last season was the year following a win at The Players and Woods missing the final two Majors of the season, but it was not to be. He finished T51 in 2008, which was a big disappointment considering his playoff loss in 2007 and his T5 in 2006.  The loss in 2007 was devistating to the Spanaird and I am sure it will still be at the forefront of his mind as he hits the 1st tee on Thursday morning.  It’s weird how most of us only seem to remember the bad beats in our lives.

The man with the plan this year is Rory McIlroy (+1800) who comes in a surprising second in the odds to Woods. It is surprising not because of his ability, but because of his lack of experience. He played in the 2007 Open Championship as an amateur and had a solid T42 and this year he brought home a T10 at the U.S. Open and a T20 at the Masters, so maybe the experience may not matter.
