Oregon vs. Auburn – 2011 BCS Championship Picks Against The Spread

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Congratulations to all our members on another solid win yesterday as the Baltimore Ravens crushed the Kansas City Chiefs on the road at Arrowhead as a 3-point favorite.  Tonight, the pros at FivStarPick.com have been crunching stats, trends, key matchups and injury reports to give our members the last two winners in the 2011 college football season.  The Auburn Tigers (13-0 straight up, 9-4 against the spread) are favored by 2- points over the Oregon Ducks (12-0 straight up, 12-0 against the spread) with a total of 73.5. This line is DEAD WRONG!

Auburn won the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 4, demolishing South Carolina by a 56-17 count as a four-point favorite. Cam Newton stole the show again, accounting for six touchdowns. He completed 17-of-28 passes for 335 yards and four TDs without an interception. Newton also rushed for 73 yards and a pair of scores.

One week later, he collected the Heisman Trophy despite an avalanche of controversy that has surrounded Newton and his father, who the NCAA says orchestrated a pay-for-play scheme for his son to attend Mississippi State. Nevertheless, the NCAA has ruled that Newton remains eligible.

In the glare of the national spotlight, Newton hasn’t flinched on the field. Since the story first went viral in early November, Newton has basically played perfect football in four games. He has 13 touchdown passes compared to only one interception, and that pick only occurred due to a deflection after Newton had hit his target right between the numbers.

Newton has connected on 67.1 percent of his passes for 2,589 yards with a 28/6 touchdown-to-interception ratio. His scrambling is equally as lethal, as evidenced by 1,408 rushing yards and 20 touchdown runs.

Newton gets all the publicity, and deservingly so, but Gus Malzahn’s high-octane offense has weapons galore. Newton’s favorite target is junior WR Darvin Adams, who had seven receptions for 217 yards and two TDs against the Gamecocks. For the season, Adams has 48 receptions for 909 yards and seven TDs.

Auburn has three outstanding running backs, including sophomore speedster Onterio McCalebb, true freshman Michael Dyer and senior Mario Fannin. Dyer has rushed for 950 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. McCalebb has 763 rushing yards and nine TDs to go with an eye-opening 8.6 YPC average. Fannin has 395 rushing yards and five TDs, averaging 6.5 YPC.

It was McCalebb who busted loose for a 70-yard TD scamper midway through the fourth quarter to lift AU to a 24-17 win over LSU.

AU’s defense is led by one of the nation’s premier pass rushers in DT Nick Fairley, who led the SEC with 10 ½ sacks and 21 tackles for losses. While Newton has garnered most of the headlines, Fairley’s presence and production has been equally important. Without Fairley, AU’s defense is ordinary at best.

Truth be told, the Tigers’ defense, particular their secondary, can be had. Auburn ranked eighth in the SEC in scoring defense, ninth in total defense and 11th in pass defense.

Oregon is coming off a 37-20 win at Oregon State as a 16-point road favorite. LaMichael James rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns, while Darron Thomas threw a pair of TD passes without being intercepted.

James finished second behind Newton in the Heisman voting. The sophomore RB has rushed for 1,702 yards and 21 TDs. Thomas has also put up huge numbers, throwing for 2,500 yards while posting a 28/7 TD-INT ratio. Thomas has also rushed for 492 yards and five TDs. Jeffrey Maehl is Oregon’s top WR, pulling in 68 catches for 943 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Auburn owns a 7-2 spread record in nine games as a single-digit favorite. Oregon is in its first underdog spot of the season.

This is the highest total seen by either team this year. The ‘over’ is on a 6-2 run for Auburn and has gone 8-5 overall. Other than a total of 73 ½ in a 62-24 home win over Chattanooga, AU’s highest total was 61.

Oregon has seen the ‘over’ go 8-4 overall, but the ‘under’ went 2-1 in the Ducks’ three games that had a total in the 70s. The highest total they saw was 72 ½.

Auburn @ Mississippi State – College Football Picks Against The Spread

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

The pros at FivStarPick.com have been crunching stats, trends, key matchups and injury reports to give our members another winner tonight.  The Auburn Tigers are favored by 1.5 points over the Mississippi State Bulldogs with a total of 56.5.

The Mississippi State program fell on hard times when Sylvester Croom replaced Jackie Sherrill in 2004, but the optimism in Starkville was back when Dan Mullen entered the picture in 2009.

This optimism was never more evident than when the new squad brought out over 34,000 to their spring game, a state record.  In addition, the Bulldogs crushed Memphis in their season opener, 49-7.

MSU can run the ball.  They returned four starters to an offensive line that blocked the top rushing attack in the SEC last season. The question mark for Mississippi State, however, has always been at the QB position. That question might have been answered in new QB prospects Chris Relf and Tyler Russell.  Both looked sharp as they threw the ball with ease to Wide Receivers Brandon Heavens and Chad Bumphis, both recording 100 yard games. Russell was extremely impressive completing 13-for-16 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns.

Now enter the Auburn Tigers.  There are several story lines at play tonight.  The first is the revenge factor as the Bulldogs were bloodied 49-24 in their 2009 SEC opener at Auburn.  The other story is the drama behind new Auburn QB Cam Newton.

Cam Newton led the Blinn Buccaneers to the junior college national title in 2009 while throwing for 2,833 yards and 38 touchdowns.  Newton began his collegiate career at the University of Florida as backup to Tim Tebow, but he had a run-in with the law over a stolen laptop that caused his time at Florida to come to an end.

After his stellar JC campaign, Dan Mullen thought Newton was ready to resume his Division 1-A college career at Mississippi State, he was shocked to find out Newton chose Auburn.  So tonight Mr. Newton will face an enthusiastic Mississippi State crowd eager to show the youngster he chose the wrong school.

Newton got his Auburn career off to a fantastic start last weekend with five touchdowns and 357 yards total offense; all while setting the school record for rushing yards for a quarterback after he finished with 171 yards on 15 carries.

Having said all that, this will not be an easy game to handicap, but the pros at FiveStarPick.com have broken down every stat, trend, injury report and weather forcast on this game to provide our members with a winning play.  Try FiveStarPick.com today for only ($19.99) and see if our talent for picking college and pro football winners exceeds your expectations.  We are the only sports handicapping service in the business that documents our last 30 plays, then displays them on our homepage for all to see.  It’s because we have nothing to hide…we just win games against the spread.  Join our family today and start your winning streak tonight.
