Las Vegas sportsbooks have opened the line in tonight’s game between the Navy Midshipmen and the Ball State Cardinals at 7 with the total set at 60.  Navy (1-0 SU, 0-0 ATS) is a road underdog at +220 on the money line (risk $100 to win $220), while Ball State (1-0 SU, 0-0 ATS) comes in as a money line favorite at -260 (risk $260 to win $100). 

Ball State’s junior quarterback, Nate Davis, went 21-24 for 290 yards with 3 TD’s and no interceptions in his 48-14 stomping of Northeastern. The Ball State offense had three other playmakers in senior wide receiver Dante Love (9 catches, 171 yards, 2 TDs), senior TE Darius Hill (5 catches, 45 yards, 1TD) and junior running back MiQuale Lewis (11 carries, 95 yards, 1 TD).  Ball State’s is returning all 11 starters on offense from last year.

Navy, on the other hand, is bring in a new coach – Ken Niumatalolo.  In the Midshipmen’s 2008 debut, Niumatalolo won decidedly over Towson 41-13.  Senior RB Shun White ran for a school-record 348 rushing yards on 19 carries.  White scored a touchdown on runs of 33, 87 and 73 yards and averaged 18.3 yards per carry.  Navy starting QB Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada has a hamstring injury, so Jarod Bryant will get the start tonight.  Bryant can run too as seen in his 75 yards on 17 carries against Towson.  In addition, Bryant scored the game’s first touchdown on a 20 yard TD run.

Now…let’s look at some match-up stats and trends.  On defense, the Midshipmen are bringing back 8 starters from last season.  The Cardinals are bringing back 7.  In last year’s meeting, Ball St. won in overtime, 34-31, as a 7-point dog.  Navy is 11-2 against the spread as a road dog since 2003.  Ball State is 8-3 against the spread as a home favorite.
