NBA Basketball Picks – Magic @ 76ers – Who Covers The Spread

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com is starting to heat up…Finally!  Now winning 7 of our last 9, we look to continue the trend by giving our members 3 ATS winners today.  The focus of today’s preview is the matchup between the Orlando Magic and the Philadelphia 76ers.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Magic as 2-point road favorites with the total set at 197.

The Orlando Magic acquired point guard Rafer Alston at the trade deadline to help reclaim their status in the Eastern Conference, but it is obvious that the team really misses All-Star Jameer Nelson.  Orlando (42-16 SU, 37-21 ATS) was crushing opponents before Nelson left the game against Dallas on February 2nd with a season ending shoulder injury and since have had a lacluster 6-6 straight up run.

In recent meetings with Philadelphia (29-28 SU, 27-28 ATS), the Magic have won seven of eight, including their first two matchups earlier this season.  The Sixers have won consecutive games after dropping their first four following the All-Star break.  The Sixers have managed to somehow contain Magic center Dwight Howard, but this is the teams’ first matchup since Elton Brand was shut down for the season with a shoulder injury.

NBA Basketball Pick Of The Day – Heat @ Magic – Who Covers The Spread

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Man…Blake Griffin’s concussion last night was the icing on a very tumultuous week for FiveStarPick.com, but we are looking forward to a few wins on the board today.  The focus of today’s preview is the in-state rivalry between the Miami Heat and the Orlando Magic.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list Orlando as a 9-point home favorite over Miami, with the total hovering around 191.

Miami (29-25 SU, 25-28 ATS) is coming off a 6-point victory against Philadelphia yesterday as a 3.5-point home favorite, 97-91. The combined 188 points pushed the closing total for bettors.  The Heat lost the rebounding battle to the Sixers, 42-38, but hit 51-percent of their shots from the field (38-of-74) including 25 points and nine assists from DWade.  Center Jermaine O’Neal is now finding his way by adding 17 points with 10 rebounds.  Miami is 11-15 SU and 13-12 ATS on the road this year and have lost their road games by an average score of 100-97.

Orlando (40-14 SU, 34-19 ATS) is coming off a win in Charlotte last Friday night as a 2-point road favorite, 92-80.  The Magic had lost three games in a row ATS before covering against the Bobcats. The combined 172 points went Under the 188-point closing total.  Orlando also got out-rebounded by their opponent, 45-42, but shot 43 percent (31-of-73) from the field to hold on to victory. Forward Hedo Turkoglu was the high scorer for the Magic with 24 points, while center Dwight Howard added 13 points and 16 boards.

Now let’s talk trends…The Magic are 21-6 SU and 16-11 ATS at home, with the ‘over’ going 16-11.  Miami had lost nine games in a row to Orlando SU (1-7-1 ATS) before beating the Magic January 24th as a 7.5-point home underdog, 103-97.

NBA Basketball Pick Of The Day – Hornets @ Lakers – Who Covers The Spread

Friday, February 20th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com is on an unprecedented run of losses.  It happens from time to time in this business, but it’s depressing nonetheless.  Tonight we look to right the ship as we give our members the plays in 5 NBA matchups tonight.  Las Vegas sports books list the Lakers as 9-point home favorites with the total coming in around 207.

The Hornets are coming off a 117-85 shalacking of Orlando last Wednesday.  New Orleans has struggled to click on offense in this situation, scoring 90.9 PPG on offense for a point margin of minus -8.6 PPG (allowing 99.5 PPG). And coming off one-day of rest has the Hornets pulling in a skimp 10-13-1 ATS record.

New Orleans has covered six of the last 10 games against the Lakers and is 3-1 ATS in the last four games in Los Angeles.

The Lakers have won 13 of the last 15, but more importantly have gone 10-3 ATS in their last 13. In the last two games back from the break, L.A. has scored an average of 112.5 PPG, is hitting close to 47 percent of its shots and was able to hold Atlanta to 83 points on Tuesday (winning 96-83) before giving up 121 points in a win against Golden State (129-121) on Wednesday.

Scoring 108.3 PPG and returning money on the ‘over’ at 17-11-1 runs counterintuitive to a 5-2 ‘under’ run in the last seven at home for the Lake Show. Again, we have another trend that pulls total players the other way as L.A. is 17-9 on the ‘over’ coming off one day of rest. Off the short day without a game, the Lakers are scoring 108.2 PPG while allowing 103 PPG.

NBA Basketball Pick Of The Day – Lakers @ Warriors – Who Covers The Spread

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com is licking its wounds after taking a beating in its member plays over the last few nights.  Betting on sports is about weathering the storm and last night we hit an ice patch.  Tonight we look to melt the ice as we give our members the ATS winners in 3 games.  The focus of this preview is tonight’s game betweent the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors.  Las Vegas sports books list the Lakers as 5-point road favorites with the total hovering around 226.

The Lakers returned from the All-Star break by blowing out Atlanta last night and tonight they will face a very rested Pacific Division rival in the Golden State Warriors.  Los Angeles (43-10 SU, 28-25 ATS) pulled away from Atlanta with a 22-12 run in the second quarter last night, then used a 40-point third period to help build a 25-point lead.  Six (6) Los Angeles players reached double figures in scoring.  Kobe played 28-plus minutes and Pau Gasol recorded his 3rd career triple-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.  Lamar Odom added 15 points and 20 boards into the mix as well.

The Lakers hope they saved enough energy for what’s sure to be another fast-paced affair with the Warriors (19-35 SU, 25-26-3 ATS).  Los Angeles has beaten Golden State twice this year.  The first was a 130-113 victory at home on December 28th, then a 114-106 road win on January 7th.  Golden State is 14-12 SU in Oakland, but closed the first half of the season with home wins over Utah, New York and Portland…not easy wins.

NBA Basketball Pick Of The Day – Celtics @ Mavericks – Who Covers The Spread

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Big win last night!  The pros at FiveStarPick.com bet the welfare check on Carolina last night and thanks to a late 2nd half 14-0 run, our kids can now go Ivy League.  It is not often that we lay our ass on the line for an in-state, in-conference rivalry game, but when we see a soft line like the one last night, we have to pounce…and pounce we did.  Congratulations to all our members who go a piece of the action.  Tonight we will be handicapping 2 games for our members.  The first is a college basketball game between Portland U and San Francisco.  The second is the focus of today’s preview as the Boston Celtics lace up to take on the Dallas Mavericks.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Celtics as 2-point road favorites with the total set at 194.

After losing to the Lakers at home last Sunday, 110-109, Boston (42-11 SU, 29-24 ATS) has been somewhat flat with a win in New York, 110-100, and a loss at home against San Antonio, 105-99.  In Boston’s last 7 games against the Dallas Mavericks (31-20 SU, 24-27 ATS,) Boston is 6-1 ATS.  What’s more, in their last 9 games coming off of two days rest, the Celtics are a solid 7-2 ATS.

The Mavs, on the other hand, have been hot of late.  In their last 7 games, they are 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS and have shot 51.8 percent from the field including 36.9 percent from three-land.  What’s interesting is that the Mav’s have been outrebounded 48.2 RPG to 44.8.   In addition, Dallas is 14-9 SU and 10-13 ATS record after coming off an ATS win.

Back on January 25th, the Celtics crushed the Mavs, 124-100 as 9-point favorites. This marked the Celtic’s third straight cover in head-to-head matchups.

An important injury note to take…Dallas will be without starting point guard, Jason Terry for three to six weeks.  The nine-year veteran sustained a broken bone in his non-shooting hand against the Bulls.
