2009 PGA Championship Picks – Covering The Spread at Hazeltine

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com is one of the top golf handicappers in the business, so if you like betting on golf, save our site to your favorites and get the most accurate golf picks available for the PGA Championship.  Ask any of our over 3000 members and you will soon learn that we do not dissapoint.  Now on to the PGA Championship…

The season’s final major starts today as the pros tee it up for the 91st PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.  Hazeltine has hosted its share of majors, the 1966 U.S. Women’s Open, 1970 U.S. Open, 1977 U.S. Women’s Open, 1983 U.S. Senior Open, 1991 U.S. Open and 2002 PGA Championship.  The last time the PGA Championship was held here in 2002 it was won by Rich Beem…his first and only major victory.

The course has changed since then. In 2002, the course’s total yardage was 7,360 yards.  This year, it has been lengthened to 7,674 yards which makes it the longest course in major championship history. Three of the par fives are over 600 yards while half of the four (4) par threes are now over 200 yards.

The runner-up to Beem in 2002 was none other than T-dub (Tiger Woods) whose late Sunday charge came up one shot short.  Tiger, obviously is the overwhelming favorite again this week (+150) and that really should come as no surprise to anyone.  He has won both events over the last two weeks and he is obviously playing some of his best golf of the year.  He certainly has the length to tame Hazeltine and he is probably the best putter in history.  Tiger will be seeking his fifth PGA Championship and we here at FiveStarPick.com will have a peice of him on the board this week.

Hunter Mahan (+3000) might not be a bad play either.  His last start prior to Firestone was the Open Championship where he missed the cut, but the time off helped as he registered his fourth top six in his last five events. He has missed only two cuts this year and has six top tens.  At +3000 he is certainly worth a look.

Stewart Cink, the Open Champion, at +4000?  WTF?  After taking a couple weeks off, he came back with a T6 last week at Firestone. He does have only two other top tens on the year but his game is hot right now and he should not be overlooked.  He is hitting the ball further the last few years than at any other time in his career and he still one of the straightest drivers of the ball on tour.

Angel Cabrera, the current Masters Champion, is another surprise at +4000.  He is having an exceptional season winning the Masters in dramatic fashion over Kenny Perry and he was right in the thick of the Open Championship until a weekend mishap derailed his chances. He had a very quiet T4 last week at Firestone so he is playing at a high level now. He is ranked seventh on the PGA Tour in driving distance and that length will be beneficial at Hazeltine.

2009 British Open Golf Picks – Westwood vs. Garcia – 1st Round Matchup

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

The pros at FiveStarPick.com would rather be betting on the golf course than in any sportsbook, so as golf fans, the week of a major championship gets our juices flowing.  Today the sportsbooks have matched up Lee Westwood against Sergio Garcia and we think this is a major mis-match.

This will be the fourth time the Open has been played at Turnberry and the first since 1994 when Nick Price eagled the 17th hole in route to a one-shot victory over Jesper Parnevik.  Many of you will also remember the Open Championship in 1986 when Greg Norman won…and what about Tom Watson’s victory over Nicklaus in 1977?

Turnberry has been lengthened substantially since 1994…big surprise…and the weather at a British Open is always a major factor. The early forecast shows overcast skys with a bit of wind and rain. The wind could be the big catalyst for players who cannot flight the ball and it will certainly dry the course out which will funnel more balls into Turnberry’s deep pot bunkers.

Every Major tournament starts and ends with Tiger Woods (+165). He now has 14 Major championships, but he missed the Open Championship last season.  In addition, this will be his first ever walk around the Turnberry track. He was at Stanford the last time the Open came to Turnberry.  That may not seem like a way to win here but Woods has won five Majors at courses that he was playing competitively for the first time.

Two-time defending champion Padraig Harrington (+2200) will be a favorite for mant Europeans this week, but Harrington has missed the cut in eight of his last 14 starts, including five in a row.  Harrington decided to change his swing after winning his 3rd major becasue he felt his position at impact needed improvement.  Yikes…Dude, don’t tinker with your swing.

When will Sergio (+2000) finally break through for a Major championship?  Many thought last season was the year following a win at The Players and Woods missing the final two Majors of the season, but it was not to be. He finished T51 in 2008, which was a big disappointment considering his playoff loss in 2007 and his T5 in 2006.  The loss in 2007 was devistating to the Spanaird and I am sure it will still be at the forefront of his mind as he hits the 1st tee on Thursday morning.  It’s weird how most of us only seem to remember the bad beats in our lives.

The man with the plan this year is Rory McIlroy (+1800) who comes in a surprising second in the odds to Woods. It is surprising not because of his ability, but because of his lack of experience. He played in the 2007 Open Championship as an amateur and had a solid T42 and this year he brought home a T10 at the U.S. Open and a T20 at the Masters, so maybe the experience may not matter.

2009 US Open Golf Picks – Mickelson vs. Woods – Covering The Spread

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

The pros at FiveStarPick.com are huge golf fans and US Open week is a phenomenal week for the golfer, the fan and the bettor.  It’s the only golf event that has coverage starting from 9am on Thursday to the last putt is holed on Sunday…or even Monday for that matter.  We went back to the vault and dug up an incredible stat.  FiveStarPick.com is an incredible 276-86-29 straight up in golf picks for its members since 2004.  We even impressed ourselves with that find.  Today we look to preview the US Open tournament matchup between Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.

Lefty, the No. 2 ranked player in the world hits it great, putts it great and can get up and down from a rock quarry.  The fans love him, the players hate him and the only thing standing in the way of his fourth major is a healthy Tiger Woods.

You will find this tournament matchup listed in many Vegas sportsbooks and trust us, it’s a layup.  Phil Mickelson is not playing well, finished T-59 last week in Memphis and is battling one of the toughest personal challenges a man can face in the recent breast cancer diagnosis of his wife Amy.  Love him or hate him, Phil is one of us…a degenerate gambler who can’t get enough action and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, but this is a bet that rarely comes along at such a value.  Tiger Woods is a 3 to 1 favorite over Phil Mickelson this week and he should be a 20 to 1 favorite.  We very rarely give free sports picks, but we love US Open week and to celebrate its arrival, take Tiger Woods -300 over Phil Mickelson, then collect your free cash on Sunday evening.  Our gift to you…

PGA Tour Golf Picks – Charley Hoffman vs. Rod Pampling – The Colonial Tournament

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

FiveStarPick.com hit another against the spread winner last night in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals as we gave our members the over 192.  With 10 dimes on the play, our handicappers were definately sweating the last 3 minutes as both teams continued to miss shots, free throws and layups.  LeBron finally cinched the over with a break-away dunk and it was lap dances for everyone!  Today we are switching gears to focus on the PGA Tour and The Crowne Plaza Colonial golf tournament in Fort Worth, Texas.

Colonial Golf Club has always been a shot makers course.  The names etched on the tropy are mostly current and future hall of famers including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Nick Price and Sergio Garcia.  All incredible ball strikers who flight the ball with impecable distance control.

Today, the pros at FiveStarPick.com will be giving their members two final round matchups at Colonial.  The focus of today’s preview is the Charley Hoffman – Rod Pampling match.  Both are good players who have paid their dues around the world to get to the PGA Tour.  Hoffman, a UNLV grad, is most known for his blonde mullet hairstyle, but what most fans don’t know is that he bombs it off the tee with great accuracy and can work the ball both ways with ease.  And if his putter is working…watch out.  Pampling is a grinder almost willing birdies into the hole, but he can be very mechanical with his golf swing which often leads to impure thoughts around the golf course.

Who wins this PGA Tour matchup today?  Take Charley Hoffman +105 over Rod Pampling.  The statistical probablility of Hoffman firing a better final round than Pampling is overwhelming.  Betting on golf is not easy, it takes a keen statistical analysis of how PGA Tour players perform in certain situations.  FiveStarPick.com has one of the top golf handicappers on the planet, making our service the premier place for PGA Tour picks. The pros at FiveStarPick.com very rarely give out free plays, so consider this a gift from us to you.  Become a member of our family for only $19.99 and start your winning streak tonight.

2008 PGA Championship Picks – Poulter vs. Casey – Winning Golf Picks

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

FiveStarPick.com was humbled yesterday as two of its “can’t miss” plays were upended due to bad performances by good players.  We plan to right the ship today as we give our members the winner of the Ian Poutler/Paul Casey match in the 3rd round of the 2008 PGA Championship.  Now let’s learn a little something about the two young Englishmen.

In 2005, Paul Casey’s career began to take off.  He captured his 4th and 5th European Tour victories in China, won the TCL Classic in March, beating Paul McGinleyin a playoff, then claimed the Volvo China Open in November, once again after a playoff in which he defeated fellow Englishman, Oliver Wilson. Highlights of 2004 also came in team events firstly as a member of Europe’s winning Ryder Cup team at Oakland Hills andsecondly, together withLuke Donald, as England captured the WGC -World Cup at Real Club de Golf Sevilla with Casey holing the winning putt. Secured his card as an Affiliate Member of the Tour in 2001, shortly before winning his maiden title in the Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championship in August. Finishing 22nd on the Order of Merit helped him win the 2001 Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year. Coached by Peter Kostis, his amateur highlight came when he was one of the stalwarts of Great Britain andIreland Walker Cup victory at Nairn in 1999, becoming one of only three players in 77 years to record four victories without a defeat. Won the English Amateur Championship in 1999 and 2000 and in his American college phase, won the Pac-10 Championship in 1998, 1999 and 2000, the first player to win in three successive years. Victory in the 2000 Pac-10 Championship broke the scoring record held by Tiger Woods (18 under par) witha 23 under par 265. Other records he has broken include scoring average – for the Arizona State University, previously held by Phil Mickelson. Competed on the 2004 and ‘06 Ryder Cup Teams.  But what has he done recently on the PGA Tour?

2007 – Tournaments entered – 10; rounds played – 34; in money – 9; Top-10 Finishes – 4; money – $1,012,770; (ranked N/A); best finish – T5th at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship

Ian Poulter, on the other hand, has had similar success.  In 2004 he made a splash as a member of Bernhard Langer’s victorious European Team. Won the season-ending Volvo Masters at Valderrama, defeating home favorite Sergio Garcia in a play-off, to secure his sixth European Tour title. Added a seventh in Madrid in 2006. Won the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year title in 2000 which provided the springboard for the Englishman to become one of the most exciting talents on The European Tour. Took up the game at the age of four when dad, Terry, a single figure handicapper, gave him a cut-down three wood. Turned professional at 18. Won on the Challenge Tour in 1999 but finished 30th and had to visit the Qualifying School to win his card in 23rd position. An avid Arsenal supporter, he is one of the most easily recognized players on Tour thanks to his extravagant hairstyles and dress sense.  But what has he done in 2007 on the PGA Tour?

2007 – scoring average – 70.07 / (23rd); driving distance – 282.5 / (151st); driving accuracy – 63.2% / (107th); GIR – 61.6% / (173rd); putting – 1.788 / (99th); birdie average – 3.27 per rd / (131st) / total birdies – 196; sand saves – 53.0% / (57th); all-around rank – 884 / (135th)

The question is…who wins today?  If there is one thing FiveStarPick.com knows, it’s how to make money betting on golf.  We know the game inside and out andmaintain personal relationships with many of the game’s top players.  If you would like to know who we have in today’s matchup, visit our homepage andbecome a member of the most accurate sports handicapping service on the net.  We are nearly 70% against the spread.  That means if you are a $100 bettor paying 10% juice andstarted with us at the beginning of 2008, you would be around $10,000 ahead.  Not bad for doing what you love to do.  Join our family today and start your win streak tonight.
