NBA Basketball Pick Of The Day – Celtics @ Mavericks – Who Covers The Spread

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Big win last night!  The pros at FiveStarPick.com bet the welfare check on Carolina last night and thanks to a late 2nd half 14-0 run, our kids can now go Ivy League.  It is not often that we lay our ass on the line for an in-state, in-conference rivalry game, but when we see a soft line like the one last night, we have to pounce…and pounce we did.  Congratulations to all our members who go a piece of the action.  Tonight we will be handicapping 2 games for our members.  The first is a college basketball game between Portland U and San Francisco.  The second is the focus of today’s preview as the Boston Celtics lace up to take on the Dallas Mavericks.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Celtics as 2-point road favorites with the total set at 194.

After losing to the Lakers at home last Sunday, 110-109, Boston (42-11 SU, 29-24 ATS) has been somewhat flat with a win in New York, 110-100, and a loss at home against San Antonio, 105-99.  In Boston’s last 7 games against the Dallas Mavericks (31-20 SU, 24-27 ATS,) Boston is 6-1 ATS.  What’s more, in their last 9 games coming off of two days rest, the Celtics are a solid 7-2 ATS.

The Mavs, on the other hand, have been hot of late.  In their last 7 games, they are 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS and have shot 51.8 percent from the field including 36.9 percent from three-land.  What’s interesting is that the Mav’s have been outrebounded 48.2 RPG to 44.8.   In addition, Dallas is 14-9 SU and 10-13 ATS record after coming off an ATS win.

Back on January 25th, the Celtics crushed the Mavs, 124-100 as 9-point favorites. This marked the Celtic’s third straight cover in head-to-head matchups.

An important injury note to take…Dallas will be without starting point guard, Jason Terry for three to six weeks.  The nine-year veteran sustained a broken bone in his non-shooting hand against the Bulls.

NBA Pick Of The Day – Celtics @ 76ers – Who Covers The Spread

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

FiveStarPick.com is giving its members another ATS winner in tonight’s NBA matchup between the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Celtics as 2-point road favorites with the total hovering around 191.

The Boston Celtics (40-9 SU, 28-21 ATS) are the No. 1 team in the NBA this week after recording 11 straight wins and rewarding bettors with 8 ATS wins in their last nine. The Celtics’ latest run can be attributed to a defense that allows only 90.6 PPG and an offense that outscores its opponents 94.6 to 82.8 PPG.  In addition, the Celtics are 24-1 SU and 19-6 ATS when holding opponents to 90 points or under this season.

The Philadelphia 76ers (23-23 SU, 22-23-1 ATS) aren’t a bad team either.  As a matter of fact, the 76ers have put together a 9-4-1 ATS record in their last 14.  Philly lost their last game to the Nets, 85-83, as an 8-point home favorite.

The Celtics are 2-0 SU and ATS this season against the 76ers. In their last meeting on Dec. 23, Boston rolled to a 110-91 victory at home as 13-point favorites. The road team is 7-3-1 ATS in the last 11 head-to-head meetings.

NBA Pick Of The Day – Celtics @ Magic – Who Covers The Spread

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

FiveStarPick.com is looking forward to tonight’s NBA matchup between the Boston Celtics and the Orlando Magic.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Magic as 5-point favorites with the total currently sitting at 192.5.

The Celtics are starting to play well again and it couldn’t happen at a better time as they face a brutal schedule over their next 14 games.  Ten of their next 14 games are on the road and 8 of those games are against potential playoff teams.  The Celtics have now won four straight after going 2-7 in their previous 9 games, but still the Orlando Magic are the favorite tonight.  Orlando has won 7 straight (6-1 ATS) including all four games on the road.  And these weren’t powderpuff teams either…their wins were against the Spurs, Lakers and Nuggets. The Magic are 33-8 on the season (28-12-1 ATS).  One of their eight losses happened to come against the Celtics (by 19 points) which was their biggest loss of the season.  But the most important fact to consider is that Orlando will have had five days off prior to this game and rust could be a major issue…FiveStarPick.com looks forward to watching how VanGundy and Howard will respond to this challenge.

NBA Basketball Picks – Pistons @ Lakers – Nuggets @ Celtics – Who Covers The Spread

Friday, November 14th, 2008

FiveStarPick will be giving its members a double header tonight in the NBA.  We will preview the early game first where the Denver Nuggets travel to Boston to face the Celtics.  Las Vegas sportsbooks opened Boston as a 10.5-point home favorite over Denver, with the total set at 195.

Denver (4-4 straight up, 6-2 against the spread) comes into Boston after Thursday night’s loss to Cleveland as 7-point road dogs, 110-99. The combined 209 points cashed the over 199 for bettors.  New Nugget guard Chauncey Billups led all scorers with 26 points and 6 assists.  The team shot 48 percent (35-of-73) from the field in the loss.

Boston (8-1 SU, 4-5 ATS) beat Atlanta Wednesday night, but failed to cover the 11-point spread as Forward Paul Pierce hit a shot at the buzzer to win 103-102. The combined 205 points cashed the over 184 for bettors.  Pierce finished the game with 36 points and 6 rebounds.

Denver forward Kenyon Martin is listed as ‘questionable’ against the Celtics.

Now let’s talk about the late game between the Pistons and Lakers.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Lakers as 10-point home favorites over Detroit, with the total set at 195.

Detroit (5-2 SU, 3-4 ATS) played Golden State last night and came away with the 107-102 road victory.  The Pistons Detroit have been winning their road games by an average score of 99-93 and the over is now 3-1 in those road matchups.

Los Angeles (7-0 SU, 6-1 ATS) is still the league’s only unbeaten team after beating New Orleans Wednesday as a 1-point road dog, 93-86. The combined 179 points cashed the under 196 for bettors ending a string of three straight over outings.  Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher each scored 20 points in the victory, while center Andrew Bynum had 14 points and 8 rebounds.  Los Angeles is 3-0 SU and ATS at home and the over is 2-1 in those contests. The Lakers have been winning their home games by an average score of 104-82.

Detroit guard Rodney Stuckey (illness) is expected to miss this matchup with the Lakers.

NBA Basketball Pick Of The Year – Hawks @ Celtics – Who Covers The Spread

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

FiveStarPick.com rarely gives its members a “Pick of the Year.”  The last Pick of the Year was a month ago when the Clippers were giving the Lakers 9-points in the Staples Center.  We gave our members the Lakers +9 and the Lakers won by 30.  Tonight we have a similar situation unfolding.  Las Vegas sportsbooks have the Celtics listed as 10.5-point home favorites with the total set at 179.

The Hawks (6-0 SU, 5-1 ATS) are on fire this season with a defense that only allows 85.8 points per game.  This stat has computed to the Hawks covering all but one game and the under going 4-2.  Despite all the positives, the Hawks are only shooting 44.3 percent from the field.

Boston (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) is a perfect 4-0 at home this year. Boston has held its opponents to 86.8 PPG this season and it showed in Monday’s 94-87 win against Toronto. In addition, the Celtics have allowed opposing teams to shoot only 38.2 percent from the field…a league best.
