Army vs. Navy – Winning College Football Picks Against The Spread

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

The pros at FiveStarPick.com are looking forward to this year’s Army-Navy game and continuing our tradition of perfection. We have handicapped the last seven (7) Army-Navy games and are a perfect 7-0 against the spread.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Navy Mid-Shipmen (8-4 SU, 5-5-1 against the spread) as 16-point favorites with a total of 41.5.

We are abound with patriotism at FiveStarPick.com, so this game couldn’t be more fitting to end the college football regular season.  The question is, will Obama show up to kick off? After watching him throw out the first pitch during this year’s World Series, we would advise him to sit this one out.

Army (5-6 SU, 3-7 ATS) has not been the play in recent history as the Cadets are 20-85 over the last 8 years. But now Rich Ellerson is running the show. Ellerson was brought in from Cal Poly after going 56-34 in eight seasons as head coach.  He won 3 Great West championships and went twice to the FCS playoffs.  A win today would cap off a .500 season for the first time in many years.

The Black Knights have averaged 212.1 yards per game on the ground to rank 14th in the nation this year. In addition, Army has seen quality results out of their freshman quarterback, Trent Steelman. Steelman has completed 52 percent of his passes for 560 yards and three scores, and has run the ball for 690 yards and five scores.  Patrick Mealy, RB for the Knights, is back from an injury and has rushed for 625 yards and three scores on 97 carries. This duo accounted for 167 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Black Knights’ 17-13 win over North Texas as 1-point road dogs back in November.

The Black Knights will have their hands full today with Navy’s triple-option attack. Ricky Dobbs has 924 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns on the year, all while playing with a cracked kneecap. Dobbs goto guy on the ground is RB Vince Murray who has 884 yards and six touchdowns on the year.

If there has been a chink in Navy’s armour this year it has been their defense. The Middies rank 44th in the nation, allowing 345.8 YPG, but they were torched for 428 yards in their 24-17 loss to Hawaii as 10-point road favorites on November 28th.

A win today for the Black Knights ensures an EagleBank Bowl bid against Temple on December 30th.  Navy, on the other hand, has already accepted an invitation to the Texas Bowl to face off with Missouri on December 30th.

Army has not beaten Navy since 2001 and has been outscored 72-3 in their last two meetings. Bettors seem to agree as 85% of them are taking Navy at -16.  Which way will you go?

Florida vs. Alabama – SEC Championship Picks Against The Spread

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Its Championship Saturday and the pros at FiveStarPick.com are pumped about today’s SEC Championship game between the #1 Ranked Florida Gators and the #2 Ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Gators as 5.5-point favorites with at total of 43.

Alabama (12-0 SU, 7-5 ATS) is fresh off a 26-21 road win at Auburn as 10-point favorites. The Tide were looking like they were going to go down, but somehow rallied and took the lead in the final minute on QB Greg McElroy’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Roy Upchurch.  Heisman candidate Mark Ingram definately hurt his chances for the award with a 30 yard performance on 16 carries.  McElroy, on the other hand, showed some confidence completing 21-of-31 passes for 218 yards and 2 TDs.

McElroy had never started a game until this year and played great at the beginning of this season. Then against Tennessee, Ole Miss and LSU, McElroy started looking like a rookie.  Having said that, Nick Saban’s Tide continue to find ways to get the ‘W’. Since then, McElroy has thrown five TD passes with no interceptions.

Florida (12-0 straight up, 6-5 against the spread) has a ”semi-good” quarterback with a Heisman Trophy and a pair of national titles.  Last week in The Swamp Tim Tebow connected on 17-of-21 passes for 214 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. By the way, he also rushed 15 times for 90 yards and 2 more TDs.

The Gators embarrased FSU, 37-10, as 25-point home favorites. Urban Meyer didn’t want to run up the score on legendary coach Bobby Bowden, so he pulled his starters late in the 3rd quarter and still took them to the wood shed.

On a side-bar…UF lost Junior All-American DE Carlos Dunlap after he was arrested Tuesday morning for DUI. Meyer says he is out for today’s game, but might re-instate him for the National Title Game should he prove his worth over the next few weeks. Dunlap was named the Defensive MVP of last year’s win over Oklahoma in the BCS Championship Game and he lead the SEC in sacks in 2008.  Needless to say he will be sorely missed.

Ohio vs. Central Michigan – Winning College Football Picks Against The Spread

Friday, December 4th, 2009

The pros at FiveStarPick.com will be giving our members the spread winner of tonight’s Ohio/Central Michigan game. Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Chippewas as 13.5 point favorites with at total of 54.

Central Michigan (10-2 straight up, 9-2 against the spread) returns to Detroit to play for the MAC Championship. A very familiar place for Dan LeFevour.  As a freshman, Dan LeFevour torched the Bobcats for 314 yards and 3 TDs  to lead CMU to a 31-10 win and the 2006 MAC title. A few weeks later, LeFevour beat Middle Tennessee, 31-14 as 8-point favorites in the Motor City Bowl. In 07, CMU crushed Miami (OH), 35-10 as 3-point favorties in the MAC title game. Then they played Purdue at Fort Field and lost 51-48 as a 7-point underdog. And finally, Lefevour got beat by Florida Atlantic in the Motor City Bowl, but CMU still has compiled a 4-1 against the spread record in five trips to Ford Field. Pretty solid trend.

Ohio (9-3 SU, 8-4 Against The Spread) has won four straight, including last Friday’s 35-17 win over Temple as 2-point home dogs. Senior quarterback Theo Scott completed 17-of-21 passes for 324 yards and 3 touchdowns with no INTs. In addition, Scott ran it six times for 69 yards and a pair of rushing TDs. Scott sustained an ankle injury against the Owls and was limited at practice earlier in the week.  However, he was upgraded to “probable” yesterday and will get the start.

CMU is 5-0 against the spread as double-digit favorties, but Ohio is 4-1 against the spread as an underdog in 2009. The Bobcats have won outright in three straight games as underdogs. CMU is perfect both SU and against the spread in their last three head-to-head meetings against the Bobcats.

Oregon State @ Oregon – Winning College Football Picks Against The Spread

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

The pros at FiveStarPick.com have been working overtime to bring our members the winner of the state of Oregon’s Civil War.  Tonight the Oregon State Beavers travel to Eugene to take on the Oregon Ducks, and Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Ducks as 9.5-point home favorites with a total of 63. This game is of great importance to both schools, as the winner goes on play in the Grandaddy of Them All…the Rose Bowl.

Last year Oregon State found itself in the same position…beat Oregon, and Oregon State makes their first trip to the Rose Bowl since 1964.  Oregon had a different idea as they put a 65-38 beatdown on their hated rival.

For the Ducks, the offense is driven by QB Jeremiah Masoli. Masoli has totaled 1,865 yards, and 14 touchdowns through the air along with 619 yards and 12 scores on the ground. In seven games with Masoli under center this season, Oregon has scored at least 42 points.  The Oregon offense has other weapons in their arsenal.  RB LaMichael James has rushed for over 100 yards in 8 of his last 9 games.

The question is whether or not the Oregon rushing attack will hold up against an Oregon State defense that allows just 98 yards per game on the ground. The Beavers will need LB’s Keaton Kristick, Dwight Roberson and Keith Pankey to step up as to keep the Ducks from running the ball down their throats.

Oregon State QB Sean Canfield isn’t quite as good as Masoli, but the fifth-year senior has completed 70% of his passes this season with just six interceptions. With Canfield under center, the Beavers lead the Pac-10 in passing (272.5 yards per game).  RB Jacquizz Rodgers is clearly one of the best running backs in the nation and a threat to score every time he touches the ball.

South Florida @ Rutgers – Winning College Football Picks Against The Spread

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

The pros at FivStarPick.com are looking forward to tonight’s action as we give our members two plays on the board. The focus of this preview is our play on the Big East matchup between the South Florida Bulls and the Rutgers Scarlett Knights.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Scarlett Knights as 2.5-point home favorites with a total of 43.5.

After some preseason hype on Rutgers, Cincinnati came out on opening day and spanked the Knights, 47-15. They took that loss on the chin, but with a win tonight, the 6-2 team will be eligible for a bowl game, their fifth postseason appearance in a row.

The story this season for Rutgers has been turnovers. The Scarlet Knights have only given up 7 this year and have forced 25, the best turnover margin in the country. The issue for the Knights is true freshman quarterback Tom Savage.  Savage  hasn’t been great for Schiano but has managed games well and seems to get the ball to his playmakers.

Senior WR Tim Brown is a favorite target of Savage averaging 21.9 yards per catch, with five touchdowns on the year. The ground game features Joe Martinek, Jourdan Brooks, and freshman De’Antwan Williams who all give Rutgers great promise for the future.

On defense, Rutgers has held opposing offenses to 3.3 yards per carry through eight games, but the secondary has been known to give up some big plays through the air.

The South Florida offense has a great young talent in quarterback B.J. Daniels.  Daniels took over the starting role after All-Big East QB Matt Grothe blew out his knee in the third game of the season against Charleston Southern. Most fans of the Bulls thought that was the end of the season for USF, but Daniels has proven he’s the real deal on through the air and on the ground. He busted West Virginia last week for three touchdown passes while rushing for over 100 yards. Daniels and RB Moise Plancher will give Schiano’s defense all they can handle tonight, not only dealing with the double threat from Daniels, but WR Carlton Mitchell has 29 catches for 542 yards this season, including five receptions for over 50 yards.

On defense, the Bulls are led by DE George Selvie and DE Jason Pierre-Paul. Pierre-Paul, a junior college transfer, has two sacks, five hurries and 9.5 tackles for loss and has returned an interception for a touchdown.
