College Basketball Pick Of The Day – Pittsburgh @ UConn – Who Covers The Spread

Monday, February 16th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com bounced back from “Black” Saturday with a 2-1 ATS performance on Sunday, and we are looking forward to a few more wins tonight.  The focus of today’s preview is the much anticipated Big East showdown between the two of the top ranked teams in the country.  The Pittsburgh Panthers will make the drive East to Connecticut to face the Huskies today, and even though we’re still a month away from the big tournament, this game should be a great preview of what’s to come next month.  Las Vegas sports books have listed the Huskies as 3-point home favorites with the total set at 134.5.

Pittsburgh (23-2 straight up, 12-6-1 against the spread) comes into this game winning 7 of its last 8 outings this season and are an astounding 6-1 ATS in their last 7.  Pittsburgh put on a clinic last Saturday against the Bearcats shooting 67.4 percent from the field.  The Panthers pushed as 16-point home favorites, 85-69.  Pitt had five players in double digits against the Bearcats.

Connecticut (24-1 SU, 10-9 ATS) has won 3 consecutive SU contests and 12 SU against Big East competition.  UConn is 8-4 ATS for those 12 games, but bookmakers are making adjustments for UConn which has caused them to post a 1-2 ATS number in their last three games.  In their last game against Seton Hall, the Huskies won 62-54, failing to cover the spread as 9.5-point road favorites.  The Huskies failed to cover the spread in this game mostly because they shot 15 of 27 from the line.  Convert just 2 more of those shots and it’s a cover.  That really pissed us off because we gave UConn to our members.

Connecticut has won three of its last four home games against the Panthers, covering the spread just once. The ‘under’ is 4-2 in the past six meetings of these conference foes.  The Over is 10-9 for the Panthers this season and 3-1in their last four games.

College Basketball Pick Of The Day – Michigan State @ Michigan – Who Covers The Spread

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

The pros at FiveStarPick.com will be handicapping 4 games for our members on tonight’s board.  The focus of this preview will be the always great rivalry between the Michigan State Spartans and the Michigan Wolverines.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list Michigan State (19-4 straight up, 11-8-1 against the spread) as 4-point favorites with a the total fluctuating between 133 and 133.5.

Michigan (15-9 SU, 10-8-1 ATS) has lost 6 of its last 8 games, but covered the spread in their last 2.  The Wolverines lead UConn at halftime on Saturday, 34-33 and were up 43-39 mid way through the second half, but the Huskies eventually pulled away and beat the Wolverines, 69-61.  Michigan was getting 16 ½-points, so it was an easy cover for Big Blue backers.  Douglass scored 20 points and made 6 of 8 from behind the arc in the loss.

Michigan State has won 4 of its last 5 games both SU and ATS.  Last Saturday they covered against Indiana as 21-point favorites, 75-47.  Chris Allen scored 16 points for the Spartans off the bench and Draymond Green had a double-double that included 15 points and 12 rebounds.

But Michigan is always tough on their home court boasting a record of 12-2 SU and 7-2 ATS in Ann Arbor. They have home wins over Duke, Illinois and Penn State.   Michigan is 3-5-1 ATS in nine games as an underdog this season.

College Basketball Pick Of The Day – UConn @ Louisville – Who Covers The Spread

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Now that football is officially over, the pros at FiveStarPick.com will be focusing their attention solely on college and pro hoops.  Tonight we all get the benefit of watching two serious National Championship contenders when the UConn Huskies go on the road to play the Louisville Cardinals.

Most Las Vegas sportsbooks list Louisville (17-3 straight up, 12-8 against the spread) as 3-point home favorites with the total hovering around 138.  Louisville has won 9 in a row going 7-2 against the spread in as many games.  The Cardinals are coming off Saturday’s home win over West Virginia as 6.5-point home favorites, 69-63.  Jerry Smith scored 20 points for Louisville, but 26 turnovers proved too difficult to overcome as the Cards missed covering by a 1/2 point.

UConn (20-1 SU, 9-7 ATS) is also on a 9-game winning streak.  The Huskies are 6-3 ATS over the nine-game stretch including an ATS win over Providence, 94-61 as 13-point home favorites. Hasheem Thabeet messed around and got a triple-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.  A.J. Price had 19 points and Stanley Robinson addded 18.

Rick Pitino’s team has gone 8-5 ATS in their last 13 home games, but since 2000, UConn has won four of six head-to-head meetings against Louisville.  However, the Cards are 3-0-1 ATS in the last four encounters.
