Wyoming vs. Fresno State – New Mexico Bowl Picks Against The Spread

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Bowl Season is finally here and the pros at FiveStarPick.com have been working overtime to analyze today’s college bowl schedule.  The focus of this preview is the New Mexico Bowl between the Wyoming Cowboys and the Fresno State Bulldogs.  Las Vegas Sportsbooks list the Bulldogs as 10.5-point favorites with a total of 54.5.

One of the reason’s Wyoming (6-6 straight up, 8-3 against the spread) is bowl eligible is new head coach Dave Christensen. The former Missouri Offensive Coordinator threw out Wyoming’s old read-option offense and installed a new spread attack.

The Cowboys have increased their point production from 12 ppg to 16 ppg, but they are still ranked 86th on the ground (128.0 yards per game) and 103rd through the air (170.7 YPG).

Wyoming has a true freshman at quarterback in Austyn Carta-Samuels who has completed 59 percent of his passes for 1,752 yards and seven touchdowns. Wyoming has also been solid in the turnover stat giving up just 13 in 2009 which is good enough to rank 20th in the country in turnover margin.  But Wyoming’s biggest problem is that they rank 102nd in the nation on converting third-down, converting just 33.9 percent of the time.

Fresno State (8-4 SU, 6-5 against the spread) has an offense that is ranked 19th nationally gaining 435.9 ypg. The majority of that yardage has come from stud running back Ryan Matthews, but QB Ryan Colburn has thrown for 2,333 yards through the air with 18 scores and a 60.2 completion percentage.

Both teams do have one thing in common…bad defense. Fresno State has faced 4 Top 25 teams this year in Wisconsin, Boise State, Cincinnati and Illinois and gave up an average of 449.5 yards of offense in each of those games.  The Cowboys also played 4 teams in the Top 25 in Texas, Utah, BYU and TCU and allowed an average of 457.6 YPG.

Fresno State went 2-2 against the spread in those games, while Wyoming was 2-2 against the spread in their spots.

The majority of public money is on the Bulldogs today, but the public should be weary of the fact that the Bulldogs have gone 0-8 against the spread in their last eight bowl games.  Wyoming, on the other hand is 8-4 against the spread in its last 12 games posted as an underdog.

College Football Pick Of The Day – Boise State @ Fresno State – Covering The Spread

Friday, September 18th, 2009

The Pros at FiveStarPick.com went 1-1 last night as we gave our members GA Tech +5.5 and the Under 57.  We lost some juice, but plan to get it all back tonight as we handicap the Boise State/Fresno State matchup tonight at 9:00 pm on ESPN.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Broncos as 7.5-point road favorites with a total of 54.

Boise State’s program has become the gold standard for non-BCS schools after their 2006 Fiesta Bowl appearance when they put the “hook n’ ladder” and the “statue of liberty” play on the Sooners. Old Bob Stoops didn’t know what hit him after that game.  On Coach Petersen’s watch, Boise State has compiled an incredible 37-4 SU record to go with a 23-15 against the spread mark.

The Broncos started the season by beating Oregon 19-8 as three-point favorites on the blue field.  They didn’t allow the Ducks to get a first down until the third quarter.  That’s a stout defense.  BSU has always been an offensive powerhouse, but now the Broncos are playing outstanding defense.  That was on display last week, dealing Miami (OH.) a shutout in a 48-0 win as 40-point favorites.

Fresno St. started the season by crushing UC Davis 51-0 in a non-lined matchup.  In Week 2, the Bulldogs went to Laverne and Shirleyville and returned home with a very dissapointing loss to Wisconsin, 34-31 in double overtime. Heartbreaking to Bulldog fans, but great for Bulldog bettors as Fresno State did hook up its backers with winning tickets as a nine-point road underdog.

Fresno has lost seven of the last eight head-to-head meetings against Boise St.  These teams were tied at 10-10 late in the second quarter of last year’s encounter, but the Broncos responded with 51 unanswered points en route to an easy cover against the spread.

For the most part, Coach Hill has to like what he’s seeing from junior quarterback Nate Colburn, who came into the year having attempted just five career passes. Colburn has completed 27-of-45 passes for 450 yards and five touchdowns…but 4 interceptions have corrupted his numbers.

So who covers the spread tonight?  It’s very easy to find out.  Try FiveStarPick.com for a month ($99.99) and see if our talent for picking college and pro football winners exceeds your expectations.  We are the only sports handicapping service in the business who documents wins and losses and displays them on our homepage for all to witness.  It’s because we have nothing to hide…we just win games against the spread.  Join our family today and start your winning streak tonight.

College Football Pick Of The Day – Nevada @ Fresno State – Who Covers The Spread

Friday, November 7th, 2008

FiveStarPick.com will be giving its members the winner of tonight’s game between the Nevada Wolfpack and the Fresno State Bulldogs.  Las Vegas sportsbooks opened Fresno State as 2-point favorites with the total set at 71.  The line has fluctuated a lot ever since with some books showing Nevada as 1-point favorites.  A Pick-em is probably the most accurate line in our opinion.

Nevada (4-4 Straight Up, 3-3 ATS) will need to win their last 3 games, one of those against Boise State, to become bowl eligible.  Fresno State (5-3 SU, 1-7 ATS) is one win away from getting that 6th win and just missed last week falling to LA Tech on the road 38-35.  After tonight, they will have 2 tough games left including Boise State and San Jose State.

Nevada’s offense is based soley around the performance of QB Colin Kaepernick.  Kaepernick has 12 touchdowns this season both on the ground and through the air and RB Vai Taua ran for 160 yards and a score against Hawaii last week.  Let the pundits say what they will, but Nevada’s offense has shown it can score both at home and on the road.  The Wolfpack defense, on the other hand, has had its struggles.  In their four losses this season, opponent offenses have put up some big numbers…New Mexico State put up 48 and Missouri scored 69.

Fresno State had back-to-back wins before losing on the road to Louisiana Tech last week.  The Bulldog offense gained 359 yards, but only 63 of those yards were on the ground. Starting QB Tom Brandstater threw for 296 yards and 4 TDs, but to win tonight they will need more production out of the ground game.  The Bulldog defense wasn’t great last week either giving up nearly 400 yards on the ground.  That’s why the total for tonight’s game is at 71.

So who covers the spread in this matchup?  Why not let FiveStarPick.com help you with the answer?  Aren’t you tired of getting cold called by services that tell you about their 750,000 star play that’s a guaranteed winner?  Here is a bit of advice…NOTHING is guaranteed when you are betting on sports!  These so called “handicappers” call 500 people on a Saturday morning and give them all a free play; 250 people will get Nevada +1.5 and 250 will get Freson State -1.5.  After the game ends, they call back the 250 people who won and pitch them on charging thousands of dollars to their credit cards for more guaranteed winners.   We are not your typical sports handicapping service.  We care about our members and we live and die on every play. Why?  Because we are moving thousands of dollars of our own money on the same plays we give you. Gambling on sports is how we make our living.  Do we win every play?  Absolutely not and we will never pretend to.  Our plays are always posted for all to see, including our losing streaks. But by the end of the year we always seem to have a few hundred thousand dollars of the sportsbook’s money in our casino account.  Let us try and do the same for you.  Join our family of winners today and start your winning streak tonight.
