Wyoming vs. Fresno State – New Mexico Bowl Picks Against The Spread
Saturday, December 19th, 2009
Bowl Season is finally here and the pros at FiveStarPick.com have been working overtime to analyze today’s college bowl schedule. The focus of this preview is the New Mexico Bowl between the Wyoming Cowboys and the Fresno State Bulldogs. Las Vegas Sportsbooks list the Bulldogs as 10.5-point favorites with a total of 54.5.
One of the reason’s Wyoming (6-6 straight up, 8-3 against the spread) is bowl eligible is new head coach Dave Christensen. The former Missouri Offensive Coordinator threw out Wyoming’s old read-option offense and installed a new spread attack.
The Cowboys have increased their point production from 12 ppg to 16 ppg, but they are still ranked 86th on the ground (128.0 yards per game) and 103rd through the air (170.7 YPG).
Wyoming has a true freshman at quarterback in Austyn Carta-Samuels who has completed 59 percent of his passes for 1,752 yards and seven touchdowns. Wyoming has also been solid in the turnover stat giving up just 13 in 2009 which is good enough to rank 20th in the country in turnover margin. But Wyoming’s biggest problem is that they rank 102nd in the nation on converting third-down, converting just 33.9 percent of the time.
Fresno State (8-4 SU, 6-5 against the spread) has an offense that is ranked 19th nationally gaining 435.9 ypg. The majority of that yardage has come from stud running back Ryan Matthews, but QB Ryan Colburn has thrown for 2,333 yards through the air with 18 scores and a 60.2 completion percentage.
Both teams do have one thing in common…bad defense. Fresno State has faced 4 Top 25 teams this year in Wisconsin, Boise State, Cincinnati and Illinois and gave up an average of 449.5 yards of offense in each of those games. The Cowboys also played 4 teams in the Top 25 in Texas, Utah, BYU and TCU and allowed an average of 457.6 YPG.
Fresno State went 2-2 against the spread in those games, while Wyoming was 2-2 against the spread in their spots.
The majority of public money is on the Bulldogs today, but the public should be weary of the fact that the Bulldogs have gone 0-8 against the spread in their last eight bowl games. Wyoming, on the other hand is 8-4 against the spread in its last 12 games posted as an underdog.
