Ravens @ Jets – Monday Night Football Picks Against The Spread

Monday, September 13th, 2010

The pros at FiveStarPick are coming off a 1-1 Sunday for our membership in the NFL with plays on the Packers and Falcons.  Tonight we feel confident on our Monday Night Football spread winner as the Baltimore Ravens lace em up on the road at the New York Jets.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Jets as 1.5-point road favorties with a total of 36.  We think this line is DEAD WRONG.

Not only is this the first Monday Night Football game of the season, but after being on “Hard Knocks” and acquiring some high profile talent in the off season, fans and pundits want to know if the Jets can live up to the hype.  The Ravens, on the other hand, are trying to make some noise of their own with the pick up of WR’s Anquan Boldin and T.J. Housshmandzadeh.

Baltimore looked strong in the preseason going 3-1 Against The Spread; their only loss coming against St. Louis.  The Ravens D is still stout limiting their opponents to 25 total points. Since Harbaugh took the reigns, the Ravens are 9-6-1 Against The Spread as a road dog.

The Jets started last season 3-0 in Rex Ryan’s debut, but lost 7 of their next 11 games.  Indianapolis and Cincinnati each lost their final games to the Jets allowing them to clinch a playoff berth. The Jets made it all the way to the AFC Championship before eventually falling at Indianapolis.  Mark Sanchez enters his pivotal second season as the Jets signal caller.  The second season usually puts to rest whether or not season one was a fluke.  New York finished the preseason 2-2 Against The Spread, with both losses coming at home to the Giants and Redskins.

The Jets had trouble against division opponents last season, going 2-4 Against The Spread in the AFC East.  Against non-divisional opponents in 2009, they finished 9-4 Against The Spread.  New York is 1-4 Against The Spread in their last five Monday Night outings.

Buffalo Bills @ New York Jets – Winning NFL Picks Against The Spread

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

The pros at FiveStarPick.com are coming off a monster Saturday going 3-0 against the spread for our members. As a matter of fact, we are 14-1 against the spread in our last 15. Damn that’s some good stuff!!! If you want to dive deeper into the FiveStar legend, our members went 5-0 against the spread in the NFL last week…But enough about us. Today we are giving our members two (2) plays in the NFL.  The focus of this preview is the 4pm matchup between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Jets as 9-point favorites with a total of 36.5.

Coach Rex Ryan is looking for redemption.  After taking the Jets to their first 3-0 start in years, they have lost their last two (2) games both straight up and against the spread.  Today, the Jets may have an ideal chance to change course against the crappy Buffalo Bills who are on their own 3-game losing streak.

New York (3-2 straight up, 3-2 against the spread) won there first three games behind a superb defense that allowed 11.0 PPG and 256.0 YPG while forcing 7 turnovers. Ryan’s Jets had the same swagger he instilled in his defense in Baltimore, where he spent the last 10 years. The Jets defense, however, seems to have lost their swagger in consecutive losses. The unit allowed 343 yards in a 24-10 defeat at New Orleans on Oct. 4 and gave up season highs in passing yards (262) and total yardage (413) en route to a 31-27 defeat at Miami on Monday night. (FiveStarPick.com gave its members the Dolphins +2.5 and the Over 36 in that game…both winners.)

Despite the back-to-back losses, New York is tied for first in the AFC East with the Pats and the Buffalo Bills (1-4 straight up, 2-3 against the spread) might just be the ticket to getting that Jet defense back on track.

Buffalo has lost their last two games to winless teams while totaling an abysmal 494 yards of total offense and turning the ball over six times.  The Bills committed 13 penalties in a 6-3 loss to Cleveland in Week 5, which brings the Bills win total to 4 in their last 17 games under Dick Jauron.  In addition, Buffalo has been outscored 71-20 during their three-game skid and Edwards hasn’t been able to open up a passing attack with wide receivers Terrell Owens and Lee Evans. They each have 12 catches and a touchdown while combining for 361 yards.

NFL Monday Night Football Picks – Jets @ Dolphins – Who Covers The Spread

Monday, October 12th, 2009

The pros at FiveStarPick.com are coming off of a monster weekend in College and NFL football. With a 6-2 against the spread ledger in College Football on Saturday and a 3-0 against the spread mark in the NFL on Sunday, I would say our members had a few extra duckets in their sportsbook account this morning.  Which brings us to the Monday Night Football game tonight between the Jets and Dolphins. Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Jets as 2.5-point road favorties with a total 36. The line has come down from 3.5 since yesterday.

The last time the Jets and Dolphins played against each other, the hype was all about Chad Pennington and Brett Favre having a shot at the AFC East title. Miami won on the road, 24-17, giving the Dolphins their first AFC East title since 2000 and erasing the 1-15 2007 season from everyone’s mind.  Since then, Favre has moved on to Minnesota, while Pennington is out for the season with a right shoulder injury suffered at San Diego.

The Jets are an impressive 3-1 straight up, thanks to a strong defense.  New York has allowed only 3 offensive touchdowns this season and they have played 4 teams that rank in the top half of the league in yards per game.

On the offensive side of the ball, Jets Rookie Mark Sanchez is leading the attack.  He has been incredibly stable with only 4 turnovers in his first 3 games. However, the Jets equaled that combined turnover amount in the New Orleans loss.  Sanchez had a 272-yard effort in the opening week win at Houston, 24-7, but has failed to throw for more than 175 yards in each of his last 3 games. Sanchez does have help at wide receiver with Braylon Edwards moving over from the Browns last offseason.

The Dolphins lead the NFL in rushing with pros Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams in the backfield. The Dolphins are still running the ”Wildcat” offense successfully with Ronnie Brown in a shotgun formation, but the running attack is not the only high statistical ranking they have, they also rank second in the league in rushing defense, only allowing 61 yards/game.

Miami has had one of the most difficult starting schedules, facing three playoff teams in the Falcons, Colts, and Chargers. The Dolphins started the season 0-3 straight-up and 0-3 against the spread. Miami was held below 300 yards in total offense in losses at Atlanta and San Diego, but rushed for 239 yards against Indianapolis in a 27-23 loss and 250 yards on the ground in a 38-10 blowout of Buffalo last week.

Chad Henne will be making his second career start on Monday, in place of the injured Pennington.  Henne was put in after Pennington went down in San Diego, but the Chargers eventually took the lead on a Phillip Rivers touchdown run, then sealed the game with a late game interception return for a touchdown off Henne for a 23-13 victory.

Now lets talk trends…The Jets are 8-2 SU their last ten meetings, while posting an 8-1-1 against the spread mark. The Dolphins are 3-8 against the spread at home, including a 1-4 against the spread record as a home ‘dog under Sparano. Since 2004, Miami is 4-12 against the spread at home off a SU victory, including a 1-5 against the spread mark last season.
