NBA Basketball Pick Of The Day – Hornets @ Lakers – Who Covers The Spread

Friday, February 20th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com is on an unprecedented run of losses.  It happens from time to time in this business, but it’s depressing nonetheless.  Tonight we look to right the ship as we give our members the plays in 5 NBA matchups tonight.  Las Vegas sports books list the Lakers as 9-point home favorites with the total coming in around 207.

The Hornets are coming off a 117-85 shalacking of Orlando last Wednesday.  New Orleans has struggled to click on offense in this situation, scoring 90.9 PPG on offense for a point margin of minus -8.6 PPG (allowing 99.5 PPG). And coming off one-day of rest has the Hornets pulling in a skimp 10-13-1 ATS record.

New Orleans has covered six of the last 10 games against the Lakers and is 3-1 ATS in the last four games in Los Angeles.

The Lakers have won 13 of the last 15, but more importantly have gone 10-3 ATS in their last 13. In the last two games back from the break, L.A. has scored an average of 112.5 PPG, is hitting close to 47 percent of its shots and was able to hold Atlanta to 83 points on Tuesday (winning 96-83) before giving up 121 points in a win against Golden State (129-121) on Wednesday.

Scoring 108.3 PPG and returning money on the ‘over’ at 17-11-1 runs counterintuitive to a 5-2 ‘under’ run in the last seven at home for the Lake Show. Again, we have another trend that pulls total players the other way as L.A. is 17-9 on the ‘over’ coming off one day of rest. Off the short day without a game, the Lakers are scoring 108.2 PPG while allowing 103 PPG.

NBA Basketball Pick Of The Day – Lakers @ Warriors – Who Covers The Spread

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com is licking its wounds after taking a beating in its member plays over the last few nights.  Betting on sports is about weathering the storm and last night we hit an ice patch.  Tonight we look to melt the ice as we give our members the ATS winners in 3 games.  The focus of this preview is tonight’s game betweent the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors.  Las Vegas sports books list the Lakers as 5-point road favorites with the total hovering around 226.

The Lakers returned from the All-Star break by blowing out Atlanta last night and tonight they will face a very rested Pacific Division rival in the Golden State Warriors.  Los Angeles (43-10 SU, 28-25 ATS) pulled away from Atlanta with a 22-12 run in the second quarter last night, then used a 40-point third period to help build a 25-point lead.  Six (6) Los Angeles players reached double figures in scoring.  Kobe played 28-plus minutes and Pau Gasol recorded his 3rd career triple-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.  Lamar Odom added 15 points and 20 boards into the mix as well.

The Lakers hope they saved enough energy for what’s sure to be another fast-paced affair with the Warriors (19-35 SU, 25-26-3 ATS).  Los Angeles has beaten Golden State twice this year.  The first was a 130-113 victory at home on December 28th, then a 114-106 road win on January 7th.  Golden State is 14-12 SU in Oakland, but closed the first half of the season with home wins over Utah, New York and Portland…not easy wins.

NBA Basketball Pick Of The Day – Lakers @ Cavaliers – Who Covers The Spread

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com has a full plate of action as we give our members ATS winners in 4 games today.  The focus of this preview is today’s NBA matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers.  Las Vegas sportsbooks have listed the Cavs as 4.5-point home favorites with the total settling in at around 204.

L.A. is coming off a big Thursday night win in Boston and Laker bettors have taken advantage of a 7-1 ATS record.  In those last eight games, the Lakers have averaged 119.6 PPG versus giving up 110 PPG.  Other than their overtime win against the Celtics, L.A. has maintained an average win margin of 11.8 PPG.  Bettors on LA Overs are sporting an 8-1 record the last nine games including a 6 in-a-row stretch.  In addition, taking the Over in LA’s last 8 road games has gone a perfect 8-0 for bettors.

Everyone knows that Andrew Bynum is a major force in the paint, but after he left the floor (torn MCL) last Saturday, the Laker front line has stepped it up.  Pau Gasol (18.3 PPG, 9.3 RPG) and Lamar Odom (9.7 PPG, 6.3 RPG) have combined for 38.6 PPG, with 19 RPG in their last five since Bynum’s injury.

Cleveland is no slouch averaging 105.1 PPG (allowing just 90.7 PPG).  In addition, the Cavs are crushing the boards with an average of 42.1 RPG.  Great things happen for the Cavs in their own building.  They are 49 percent from the perimiter and 79.1 percent from the line.  The Cavaliers are 18-5 ATS at home versus 14-11 ATS when traveling.

In their last 9 outings, Cleveland has maintained a 47 percent shooting average from the hard wood and is 8-1 SU.  But amazingly Cleveland is only 5-3 ATS in those outings.  The Cav’s last ATS defeat was a 107-102 victory over the Knicks on Wednesday as a 5 ½-point road favorite.  Before you bet this game, consider two important trends.  First, Cleveland has a perfect 4-0 ATS record when coming off three or more days rest.  And Second…The Cavaliers are a perfect 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS since Ilgauskas returned to the lineup on Jan. 30.  The seven-footer has averaged 13.5 PPG, with 8.8 RPG in his last four games back in uniform.
