College Basketball Pick Of The Day – Miami @ Virginia – Who Covers The Spread

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com will be giving its members 5 plays today in both professional golf and college basketball.  The focus of today’s preview is the ACC Basketball matchup between the Miami Hurricanes and the Virginia Cavaliers.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Canes as 3.5-point favorites with the total hovering around 160.

Thursday marks the ninth meeting between Miami and Virginia, with the Hurricanes leading the all-time series, 5-3. Miami has won two straight over Virginia, including a 95-93 victory in their last meeting in Coral Gables on March 1, 2008.

In that meeting, McClinton knocked down seven three-pointers en route to 34 points, while Jimmy Graham scored a career-high 19 points (7-10 FGs, 5-9 FTs) and Lance Hurdle added 10 points — including a key trey with 9.2 seconds remaining.

Virginia — who has one of the league’s top freshmen in Sylven Landesberg (18.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg) — has won two of its last three games, defeating both Clemson (85-81 OT) and Virginia Tech (75-61) at home.  Miami’s strength of schedule is ranked NINTH in the country and third in the ACC. The Hurricanes have played five games versus teams that have been ranked No.1 this season and have played four of the five teams that have been atop the polls in 2008-09 — UConn, North Carolina, Wake Forest and Duke. Pitt is the only team that has reached the top spot this season that Miami is not scheduled to face.

The Hurricanes have five wins versus the nation’s top 60 in the RPI  – with a 27-point victory over Wake Forest, a series sweep of Boston College and splits with Florida State and Maryland. In addition, the Hurricanes won at Kentucky and at St. John’s. Their only non-conference losses are to Connecticut in the Virgin Islands and to Ohio State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

College Basketball Pick Of The Day – Wake Forest @ Miami – Who Covers The Spread

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com is excited about the slew of great matchups on tonight’s board.  Marquette was an easy cover last night, but the Celtics loss ATS cost us a perfect 2-0 night.  As a bettor it is important that you learn something new about a team from every loss and last night we learned just how important Kevin Garnett is to the Celtic’s success.  So we move on to tonight’s matchup between the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the Miami Hurricanes.  Las Vegas sportsbooks are currently listing Wake Forest as a 3-point road favorite with the total set at 149.

University of Miami (14-7 SU, 7-8-1 ATS) needs a win tonight to keep their tournament hopes alive.  Miami hasn’t faired particularly well against ranked teams this year.  Their previous best wins include victories over Kentucky and FSU, but the Hurricanes have now lost three in a row, including overtime losses to VA Tech and N.C. State; and last Saturday’s loss to Maryland, 73-68, as 1.5-point dogs.

Wake Forest (17-2 SU, 9-6 ATS) started the season 16-0 and made it to No. 1 in the AP Top 25, but since then Wake has lost two of its last three games both SU and ATS. The Demon Deacons lost Saturday at GA Tech on a buzzer-beating jumper, 76-74, and never came close to covering the spread as 8-point favorites.  Wake has beaten the Canes in their last 3 outings, going 2-0-1 ATS.

Now lets talk some trends…The U is 9-3 SU but 1-5-1 ATS at home this year.  The Over is 9-7 overall for the Canes and 5-2 at home.  The Over is 8-7 overall for Wake Forest.
