College Basketball Pick Of The Day – Miami @ Virginia – Who Covers The Spread

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com will be giving its members 5 plays today in both professional golf and college basketball.  The focus of today’s preview is the ACC Basketball matchup between the Miami Hurricanes and the Virginia Cavaliers.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Canes as 3.5-point favorites with the total hovering around 160.

Thursday marks the ninth meeting between Miami and Virginia, with the Hurricanes leading the all-time series, 5-3. Miami has won two straight over Virginia, including a 95-93 victory in their last meeting in Coral Gables on March 1, 2008.

In that meeting, McClinton knocked down seven three-pointers en route to 34 points, while Jimmy Graham scored a career-high 19 points (7-10 FGs, 5-9 FTs) and Lance Hurdle added 10 points — including a key trey with 9.2 seconds remaining.

Virginia — who has one of the league’s top freshmen in Sylven Landesberg (18.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg) — has won two of its last three games, defeating both Clemson (85-81 OT) and Virginia Tech (75-61) at home.  Miami’s strength of schedule is ranked NINTH in the country and third in the ACC. The Hurricanes have played five games versus teams that have been ranked No.1 this season and have played four of the five teams that have been atop the polls in 2008-09 — UConn, North Carolina, Wake Forest and Duke. Pitt is the only team that has reached the top spot this season that Miami is not scheduled to face.

The Hurricanes have five wins versus the nation’s top 60 in the RPI  – with a 27-point victory over Wake Forest, a series sweep of Boston College and splits with Florida State and Maryland. In addition, the Hurricanes won at Kentucky and at St. John’s. Their only non-conference losses are to Connecticut in the Virgin Islands and to Ohio State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

College Basketball Pick Of The Day – Kansas @ Oklahoma – Who Covers The Spread

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

We have had over a thousand member emails this week expressing extreme frustration with our performace this year and believe me, we hear you.  Even though we are still 7 games above .500, it has been an off year for us so far and we know that you pay a membership fee for one reason and one reason only…to win!  Our living is made every year wagering on the same games we give our members and these first two months have been unprecedented.  But this is not the time to panic.  Our fundementals are strong and our system is tested.  Injury, overtimes and trend busters have accounted for many of our losses this year, but we are not here to make excuses.  We know that if we don’t win for you, you will find someone else who can.  Thank you…Now on to today’s preview.

Kansas (22-5 SU, 15-5-1 ATS) has gone 11-1 in conference games and has tied OU for first place. The Jayhawks are coming off of a solid 70-53 win over Nebraska as 12-point home favorites.  Sherron Collins scored 22 points and Cole Aldrich had 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Oklahoma (25-2 SU, 12-9-1 ATS) couldn’t beat the Longhorns last week as a one-point road favorite and a big reason was the loss of Blake Griffin to a concussion during the first half.   Texas’ A.J. Abrams took advantage of Griffin’s absence and scored 16 straight points in the final 8 minutes to seal the victory.

Griffin is out tonight and bettors will be pounding Kansas.  But Oklahoma has dominated its home court this season by going 15-0 SU.  The Jayhawks have also faired well this year for bettors going 15-5-1 ATS and they are 6-0 ATS when on the road in Big XII play.

College Basketball Pick Of The Day – Oklahoma @ Texas – Who Covers The Spread

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

FiveStarPick.com will be giving it’s members 5 plays today in college basketball.  The focus of this preview is the 9:00 PM EDT tip off between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns.  Las Vegas sportsbooks have opened Texas (17-8 SU, 9-13 ATS) as a 1.5-point favorite with a total set at 142.

Oklahoma (25-1 SU, 12-8-1 ATS) has won 13 in a row since its loss to Arkansas.  The Sooners are 8-3 ATS in that stretch.  The Sooners last game ended with a 95-74 win over Oklahoma St. as 16-point home favorites.  Blake Griffin had his 22nd double-double of the year with 40 points and 23 rebounds…both career highs.   Griffin should be the favorite for National Player of the Year honors as he averages 22.8 points a game and leads the nation in rebounding with 14.2 boards per game.

Texas has won 10 of its 13 home games at home.  However, the Longhorns are just 3-7 ATS in those games.  As a matter of fact, the Horns just are 1-3 ATS as single-digit home favorites.  The Longhorns have lost four of their last six games, going 1-5 ATS.  They lost on the road to Texas A&M, 81-66, as two-point road favorites.   Texas’ leading scorer, A.J. Abrams, scored only 7 points on 3-of-12 shooting.  Abrams typically averages 16.8 PPG.

Oklahoma has won outright in both previous games as an underdog this season.  OU beat Purdue 87-82 at Madison Square Garden as a two-point dog. The Sooners also won a 61-53 decision at Kansas St. as 1 ½-point dogs.

College Basketball Pick Of The Day – Duke @ St. Johns – Who Covers The Spread

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Could it happen again tonight?  Could Duke actually lose 5 of their last 7 games?  FiveStarPick.com has the answer.  Las Vegas sports books list the Duke Blue Devils as 12-point road favorites as they travel to St. Johns for tonight’s ESPN 7:00 pm matchup.

Duke has lost four of its last six games, but hopes to right the ship in Madison Square Garden where they have won 9 of their last 10 games.  Duke (20-5 straight up, 11-12-1 against the spread) appear to be fading again.  Since 2007, Duke has been only a .500 team in February and March, going 16-16 SU.  Duke has failed to cover the number in four straight games, including Sunday’s 80-74 loss at Boston College as a 7 ½-point road favorite. Kyle Singler had 25 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots and Gerald Henderson finished with 20 points and four steals.

St. John’s (12-13 SU, 7-11-1 ATS) has lost four in a row straight up and is a dismal 1-3 ATS.  However, the Red Storm covered in their last game against Marquette, a 73-59 loss as 16-point dogs.

The Blue Devils are 9-6 ATS as double-digit favorites, while St. John’s owns a 2-4 spread record as a double-digit underdog.

College Basketball Pick Of The Day – Pittsburgh @ UConn – Who Covers The Spread

Monday, February 16th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com bounced back from “Black” Saturday with a 2-1 ATS performance on Sunday, and we are looking forward to a few more wins tonight.  The focus of today’s preview is the much anticipated Big East showdown between the two of the top ranked teams in the country.  The Pittsburgh Panthers will make the drive East to Connecticut to face the Huskies today, and even though we’re still a month away from the big tournament, this game should be a great preview of what’s to come next month.  Las Vegas sports books have listed the Huskies as 3-point home favorites with the total set at 134.5.

Pittsburgh (23-2 straight up, 12-6-1 against the spread) comes into this game winning 7 of its last 8 outings this season and are an astounding 6-1 ATS in their last 7.  Pittsburgh put on a clinic last Saturday against the Bearcats shooting 67.4 percent from the field.  The Panthers pushed as 16-point home favorites, 85-69.  Pitt had five players in double digits against the Bearcats.

Connecticut (24-1 SU, 10-9 ATS) has won 3 consecutive SU contests and 12 SU against Big East competition.  UConn is 8-4 ATS for those 12 games, but bookmakers are making adjustments for UConn which has caused them to post a 1-2 ATS number in their last three games.  In their last game against Seton Hall, the Huskies won 62-54, failing to cover the spread as 9.5-point road favorites.  The Huskies failed to cover the spread in this game mostly because they shot 15 of 27 from the line.  Convert just 2 more of those shots and it’s a cover.  That really pissed us off because we gave UConn to our members.

Connecticut has won three of its last four home games against the Panthers, covering the spread just once. The ‘under’ is 4-2 in the past six meetings of these conference foes.  The Over is 10-9 for the Panthers this season and 3-1in their last four games.
