North Carolina @ Virginia Tech – Winning College Football Picks Against The Spread

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

The pros at FiveStarPick.com are on another 6-0 run against the spread for our members and tonight we will be arming them with another winner in the North Carolina/Virginia Tech game on ESPN.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Hokies as 16.5-point home favorites with a total of 43.5.

The Tar Heels and the Seminoles played last Thursday Night on ESPN and had a pretty interesting game, but as 16.5-point dogs, oddsmakers don’t expect another close one tonight. The main reason for this big number is that UNC’s offense sucks big-time.  Heading into last Thursday night against Florida State, the Tar Heels had the 117th ranked offense in the land. There are only 120 schools in Division 1-A!  Helloooo???

After putting up 27 points on FSU, the Heels now are 114th in the nation in total offense.  But the Heels did mangage to bring something positive away from the loss last week as their rushing offense ran for 238 yards.  The bad news for Tar Heel fans, Quarterback T.J. Yates completed just 12-of-25 attempts for 64 yards against the Noles.  Carolina relies mostly on their defense to keep them in games, but FSU QB Christian Ponder lit up the Tar Heels defense for 395 passing yards.

Virginia Tech doesn’t have the offensive weapons of Florida State, so the Heels can expect to see a lot of RB Ryan Williams.  Williams has five 100-yard rushing games in 2009 and has scored 11 touchdowns for the Hokies. The freshman will have his work cut out for him this week against a Carolina D-line anchored by a pair of huge tackles in Marvin Austin (6-3, 305) and Cam Thomas (6-4, 325).

The Hokies have averaged 34 points a game over their last four games, but like Carolina, Tech leans heavily on their defense to keep them in games.

The last time these teams hooked up, Virginia Tech clipped the Tar Heels 20-17 in Chapel Hill. On the season, North Carolina is 1-4 against the spread while Virginia Tech is 3-4 against the spread.

Florida State @ North Carolina – Winning College Football Picks Against The Spread

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

The pros at FiveStarPick.com are looking forward to another winner tonight as the Florida State Seminoles travel to Chapel Hill to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Tar Heels as 2.5-point home favorites with a total of 47.

The once proud Seminoles are now a crappy 2-4 on the season and the former Top 10 program that was always competing for National Championships has a defense ranked 107th in the nation.  As a matter of fact, the Noles are now scrambling to win games at home against Jacksonville State.  But they do have some of the hottest chicks on campus…Sorry, back to the preview.

The only positives with the Seminoles this season is that the offense seems to be progressing.  Against Miami, BYU and Georgia Tech, three tough programs, the Seminoles have averaged 44 points and 485 yards of total offense.  Against Jacksonville State, Boston College and South Florida that same unit averaged just 15 points and 367 yards total offense.  Can you say Jekyll and Hyde?

Whatever the reason for the production differences, QB Christian Ponder is one of the best signal callers in college football completing nearly 68% of his passes for 1,781 yards (10th in the nation) and a 9/1 TD-INT ratio. In addition, Ponder is throwing for just under 297 yards a game, the best in the ACC.  He has a number of talented receivers in the lineup including Bert Reed, Richard Goodman and Taiwan Easterling, but the FSU defense can’t seem to ever get off the field to let him do his thing.  As I mentioned earlier, the Seminoles rank 107th in the nation in total defense.  They have no pass rush and there corners couldn’t cover a dead guy in a morgue with a sheet.

But I have to say, North Carolina ain’t much better. What’s interesting is that the Heels have the opposite problems of the Nols.  North Carolina has a horrific offense that ranks 117th nationally, but their defense ranks 3rd in the nation.  The Tar Heels have held four of their six opponents to under 100 yards rushing. DE Robert Quinn has 7 sacks and 3 forced fumbles, while CB Charles Brown and FS Deunta Williams both have 2 interceptions on the season. Butch Davis thinks he has a star RB on offense in Ryan Houston (seven rushing touchdowns), but Tar Heel QB T.J. Yates is only throwing for 161 yards a game and has 6 touchdowns against 7 interceptions.
