North Carolina vs. Michigan State – Who Covers The Spread

Monday, April 6th, 2009

It is a bitter sweet day for us at FiveStarPick.com.  We couldn’t be more excited about watching tonight’s 2009 NCAA Basketball Championship, but this game marks the end of betting on college hoops this year.  So our advice to you tonight is to sit back, order your fat ass a pizza, have a few cold ones and tell your woman that there will be no Grey’s Anatomy tonight!!!

Las Vegas sportsbooks list North Carolina (33-4 straight up, 16-19 against the spread) as 7.5-point favorites with the total coming in around 154.

Michigan State (31-6 SU, 21-12-1 ATS) is coming off an upset victory over UConn, 82-73, as a 4.5-point dog in Saturday’s 2009 Final Four.  Izzo has brought to the Final Four a team that exudes his personality the best.  The Spartans fight for every loose ball, they crush the boards and they play tenacious D.  For example, UConn’s A.J. Price had been challenging the nation’s premier defenses all year long, but on Saturday, Price was 5-20 from the floor.  Coincidence? Not hardly.  UConn was bigger and stronger than Michigan St., but the Spartans were better and most importantly, they wanted it more.  As Rudy Tomjanovich said about the Houston Rockets…”never underestimate the heart of a champion.”

North Carolina was made the clear-cut favorite to win the NCAA Tournament on Selection Sunday.  The Tar Heels have dominated all callers as evidenced by their 5-0 ATS record in the Tournament.   UNC got on top of Villanova early and never let up.  The Wildcats tried to make a run in the second half, trimming the deficit to 5, but Danny Green answered with a long 3 and ‘Nova’s momentum was brought to a quick close.  The Heels ended up with the win and the cover, 83-69, as seven-point favorites.   Ty Lawson scored 22 points, had 8 assists, 7 boards a pair of steals.  Wayne Ellington added 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists.  And Tyler Hansbrough had 18 points, 11 boards and four steals.

Now let’s talk trends…The Tar Heels are 4-5 ATS as single-digit favorite this year, but they have cashed in all three such spots in this 2009 NCAA Basketball Tournament.  Michigan St. is 5-2 both SU and ATS as a single digit dog.

In tonight’s matchup you will see UNC run the floor at every opportunity behind the skills of Ty Lawson and the Heels will shoot the 3 any chance they get with Lawson, Ellington and Green.  Michigan St. will play the Heels tight with terrific defense and rebounding.  This is going to be a great game.

2009 Final Four Picks – UConn vs. Michigan State and UNC vs. Villanova – Who Covers The Spread

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

The 2009 Final Four is in Detroit this weekend and the lines and odds are already out.  FiveStarPick.com will be giving its members the ATS winners of both games this weekend and in the Championship Game on Monday night.

North Carolina remains the favorite to win it all at -165 (risk $165 to win $100) by Las Vegas sportsbooks.  The Tar Heels advanced to the finals by beating the No. 2 seed Oklahoma, 72-60, in the South Region finals. The Heels easily covered the spread as seven-point favorites.   As always, Ty Lawson was the fuel to Roy Williams’ fire.  Lawson scored 19 points, grabbed five rebounds, had five assists and three steals against one turnover in the victory.  Las Vegas currently lists North Carolina as a 7.5-point favorite over Villanova with the total hovering around 162.

The Villanova Wildcats knocked off top-seeded Pitt in Saturday’s closest game.  Scottie Reynolds scored the game winning shot with 0.5 seconds left to send ‘Nova to the 2009 Final Four for the first time since 1985. The Wildcats won outright as 2-point underdogs.  Coming into the tournament, Villanova’s odds to win it all was 40/1 (risk $100 to win $4,000).  Since, the number has moved to 5/1.

Michigan State dominated Louisville in the Midwest Region finals with a 64-52 victory as seven-point underdogs.  Tom Izzo has brought MSU to the Final Four 5 times now in his career. The Spartans won the title back in 2000 by beating Florida in the championship game.

Las Vegas sportsbooks have opened UConn as a 4-point favorite over Michigan State with a total of 131. UConn beat Missouri 82-75 in Saturday’s West Region finals and covered the 6.5-point spread by a half point thanks to 10 consecutive free throws in the final minute and a missed lay-up by the Tigers with a second left on the clock. Kemba Walker had 23 points off the bench.

2009 NCAA Basketball Tournament Picks – UNC vs. Gonzaga – Who Covers The Spread

Friday, March 27th, 2009

RED HOT !!!!! FiveStarPick.com is ripping into a 14-2-1 against the spread run and tonight we look to give our members the ATS winners in 4 NCAA Basketball Tournament games.  The focus of today’s preview is the matchup between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Gonzaga Bulldogs.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list North Carolina (30-4 SU, 13-19 ATS) as a 9.5-point favorites with a total of 162.

Gonzaga (28-5 SU, 15-15 ATS) advanced to its first Sweet 16 since 2006 by beating Akron and Western Kentucky.   In their 83-81 win over the Hilltoppers, the Bulldogs freshman guard Demetri Goodson’s threw up a game-winning shot with 0.9 seconds left.  The Zag’s overcame a last-minute Western Kentucky rally as Steffphon Pettigrew tied it up with 7.2 seconds remaining on the clock. All 5 Gonzaga starters were in double figures, but the Zags failed to cover the 10-point spread.  Matt Bouldin led the Zags with 20 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

UNC almost exited early in last Sunday’s second-round matchup against LSU. The Tigers trailed by 9 at intermission, but came out swinging in the second half and scored on six straight possessions to take the lead.  LSU lead by as many as 5 before Ty Lawson took the game over.  Lawson, who had missed UNC’s three previous games with turf toe, poured in 21 of his 23 points in the second half to lead the Tar Heels to the Sweet 16.  North Carolina was able to cover the spread as a 12-point favorite, 84-70.

These schools met two seasons ago at Madison Square Garden with Gonzaga winning 82-74 as a seven-point underdog.  Gonzaga’s Josh Heytvelt overwhelmed UNC’s Tyler Hansbrough with 19 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor. Meanwhile, Hansbrough had just nine points, nine boards and four turnovers.  In the point-guard matchup between Ty Lawson and Jeremy Pargo, Lawson had 11 points while Pargo had 16 points.

College Basketball Pick Of The Day – UNC @ Miami – Who Covers The Spread

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com got housed yesterday going 1-3-1 ATS and we are pissed.  But life isn’t always roses, so we learn from our mistakes and we move forward.  After all, its about winning as a percentage, right?  Today we are giving our members 3 plays in college basketball.  The focus of this preview is the North Carolina Tar Heels on the road to face the Miami Hurricanes.  North Carolina opened as a 9.5-point road favorite with the total set at 158.  As of this morning, most books have adjusted the line down to 9 because of money coming in on the ‘Canes.

The Tar Heels dominated Duke on Feb. 11 (a FiveStarPick win,) 101-87 as a 2 point road favorite.  North Carolina (22-2 SU, 10-12 ATS) hit 54.8 percent of their shots from the field against the Blue Devils, but the real story was the Heels dominance on the defensive boards.  Roy’s team outrebounded Coach K’s, 23-16.

Miami (15-8 SU, 9-8-1 ATS) will be looking to catch the Heels on a post “big win” let down after their big win in Durham.  The Hurricanes are an impressive 2-0 ATS in their last two games against Top 10 squads – Wake Forest and Duke.  The ‘Canes are 10-3 SU in Coral Gables this season, but have covered just twice in their last eight games.

North Carolina is 6-1 SU and 4-3 ATS in their last seven meetings with the Hurricanes and the Over is 5-2 in that stretch.

College Basketball Pick Of The Day - UNC @ Duke - Who Covers The Spread

Tonight’s game between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Duke Blue Devils is what college basketball is all about and the pros at FiveStarPick.com are excited about giving our members the ATS winner in this matchup.  Las Vegas sports books list North Carolina as a two-point road favorite over Duke, with the total set at 155.

North Carolina (21-2 straight up, 9-11 against the spread) is riding a seven-game SU winning streak after busting up Virginia last Saturday as a 25-point home favorite, 76-61.  But North Carolina is just 1-3 ATS its previous four games.  The Heels dominated Virgina in all aspects of the game including rebounds (42-29) and shooting percentage (42%.)  Four starters were double digit scorers including Wayne Ellington (20 points) and Tyler Hansbrough (15 points).  North Carolina is 10-1 SU and 6-4 ATS on the road, winning their games by an average score of 92-71.

Duke (20-3 SU, 12-10 ATS) has looked shaky at times in their last five games and barely slipped past Miami last Saturday in overtime as a 14-point home favorite, 78-75. The Blue Devils are also just 1-3 ATS their last four outings.  Duke was down 32-19 at halftime, but somehow managed to pull out a victory despite shooting just 33% from the floor and 31% from three-ville.  Guard Jon Scheyer led the Blue Devil offense with 22 points, while Kyle Singler added 17 and 10 rebounds.  Duke is 15-0 SU and 8-6 ATS on its home court, winning their games by an average score of 83-59.
