College Football Pick Of The Day – USC @ Ohio State – Who Covers The Spread

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com will be giving our over 3000 members the against the spread winner of tonight’s showdown between the Trojans of USC and the Ohio State Buckeyes.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Trojans as 7-point road favorites with a total of 45.5.

Ohio State was a 22-point home favorite against the Midshipmen last week.  The Bucks took a 20-7 lead into halftime, but Navy came within a two-point conversion late in the game.   Luckily for OSU Brian Rolle intercepted Ricky Dobbs’s pass for a two-point conversion the other way to clinch a 31-27 victory.

Terrelle Pryor completed 14 of 21 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown and rushed six times for 30 yards and another score.  Daniel “Boom” Herron also ran for 72 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

Ohio State’s defense knew that it was going to have its hands full with the triple-option.  The Mid-Shipmen rushed 44 times for 186 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Buckeyes are looking forward to playing USC because the Trojans run a pro style offensive attack that they are much more familiar defending.  What will be interesting is how the Trojans handle coming into the Horseshoe with a rookie under center. Matt Barkley is a true freshman quarterback running the show for Southern California this year and he’s looked good connecting on 15 of his 19 pass attempts for 233 yards and one touchdown.  Joe McKnight also shined as he compiled 145 yards and two scores on 14 carries.

Now let’s talk trends…Despite last year’s blowout, Ohio State is still 13-6 straight up and 10-8-1 against the spread in its last 19 games against Pac-10 schools.  Southern Cal has owned Big Ten programs as of late, posting a 17-8 SU and ATS mark against them recently.  The Buckeyes haven’t been listed as home ‘dogs often, just nine times since 1988. They are 3-5-1 SU and 5-4 ATS in those situations.

Fiesta Bowl Picks – Ohio State vs. Texas – Who Covers The Spread

Monday, January 5th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com looks forward to another win tonight as we give our members the ATS winner of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl which features the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Texas Longhorns.  Las Vegas sports books have listed the Longhorns as 8 point favorites with the total set at 51.5.

Ohio State entered the season with a new quarterback, Todd Boeckman. Chris “Beanie” Wells went down with a foot injury in the season opener against Youngstown State and Boeckman fell apart.  To add insult to serious injury, he then lost his starting job to true freshman Tyrelle Pryor.  Pryor completed 63 percent of his passes for 1,245 yards, had 12 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions.  But OSU’s numbers really aren’t that great…Ohio State ranks 105th nationally in passing, gaining just 148.1 yards per game through the air.

Ohio State’s rushing numbers must be off the charts, right?  But beleive it or not, they are only 28th in the nation in rushing by gaining 191.6 YPG on the ground.  Beanie Wells is OSU’s fuel and ranks 7th in the nation with 1,091 rushing yards and eight scores.  What’s more impressive is that he gained all of his yards in just nine games.  OSU will need Wells at the top of his game if they hope to beat the Longhorns tonight.

Texas doesn’t have a very big defensive line, averaging just 273.8 pounds per man, but they’re very fast and can stop the run.  In the 2008 season, they allowed just 73.6 rushing YPG and ranked 2nd in the nation amongst all teams in the FBS.  Texas’ D-Line leads the nation with 3.67 sacks per game and ranks 15th in the country with 7.08 tackles for a loss per game.

The ‘Horns offense will encounter a OSU defense with great fundamentals. Texas ranks 9th in the country in total offense this year by gaining 476.4 YPG. A big reason was Heisman candidate Colt McCoy.  McCoy completed 77 percent of his passes for 3,445 yards and threw 4 ½ touchdowns to every one interception.  McCoy slung the ball a lot to WR Jordan Shipley and WR Quan Crosby. Shipley averaged 12.4 yards per catch this season while leading the school with 11 touchdowns. Cosby caught 78 passes for 952 yards and eight scores.  Quiet the tandem.

This is just the third meeting all time between these college football powerhouses.  In their last head-to-head meeting, Ohio State won as a three-point road ‘dog, 24-7.  The Buckeyes have failed to win or cover in their last two BCS games, but were 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in their first four appearances.  Texas is making its 3rd Bowl Championship Series appearance in as many years.

College Football Five Star Pick Of The Day – Penn State @ Ohio State – Who Covers The Spread

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

FiveStarPick.com is hot on several games in today’s line-up.  After reading this, you must see our preview of today’s game between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns.  In this preview we will be looking at the matchup between two Big Ten Rivals in Penn State and Ohio State.  Las Vegas sportsbooks have listed Penn State as a 2-point favorite with the total set at 44.5.

The Nittany Lions (8-0 SU, 5-2-1 ATS) have dominated every team they’ve faced in 2008. The offense ranks 7th in the nation in scoring with 45.4 points per game and has the 6th best scoring defense in the land, allowing just 11.8 PPG.  Penn State can hurt you with the run and the pass behind Senior QB Daryll Clark.  Clark has passed for 1,531 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 190 yards, 8 touchdowns.  Then you got Evan Royster who has rushed for 893 yards and 10 TDs.  Clark also has three quality receivers to choose from with Deon Butler (30 catches, 486 yards, 3 TDs), Jordan Norwood (25 receptions, 405 yards, 5 scores) and Derrick Williams (24 catches, 282 yards, 1 touchdown).

The Buckeyes (7-1 SU, 2-5 ATS) are feeling good about this week’s showdown after a solid perfomance last week against Michigan State. Terrelle Pryor wasn’t even at his best going only 7-11 for 116 yards and a TD in the air.  He also rushed for 72 yards on 12 carries and a score.  Beanie Wells appeared to be healthy carrying the ball 31 times for 140 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

This is the first time in a long time that the Buckeyes are home underdogs in the Big Ten.  Ohio State is a dismal 3-7 SU and 5-4-1 ATS the last 10 times this has happened.

So who covers the spread in today’s game?  Why not let FiveStarPick.com help you with the answer?  Aren’t you tired of getting cold called by services that tell you about their 750,000 star play that’s a guaranteed winner. Here is a bit of advice…NOTHING is guaranteed when you are betting on sports.  These so called “handicappers” call 500 people on a Saturday morning and give them all a free play; 250 people will get Penn State -2 and 250 will get Ohio State +2.  After the game ends, they call back the 250 people who won and pitch them on charging thousands of dollars to their credit cards for more guaranteed winners.   We are not your typical sports handicapping service.  We care about our members and we live and die on every play. Why?  Because we are moving thousands of dollars of our own money on the same plays we give you. Gambling on sports is how we make our living.  Do we win every play?  Absolutely not and we will never pretend to.  Our plays are always posted for all to see, including our losing streaks. But by the end of the year we always seem to have a few hundred thousand dollars of the sportsbook’s money in our casino account.  Let us try and do the same for you.  Join our family of winners today and start your winning streak tonight.
