Texas vs. Alabama – BCS Championship Picks Against The Spread

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

The 2010 college football season comes to a close tonight for the pros at FiveStarPick.com and I have to say that it’s a very sad day for all of us.  We have been working overtime for our members today to analyze tonight’s BCS Championship Game between the Texas Longhorns and the Alabama Crimson Tide and we look forward to another spread winner in tonight’s finale.  Las Vegas Sportsbooks list  Alabama as 4-point favorites with a total of 45. Early action on Alabama pushed the line to as high as 5.5, but the betting public has since moved the line back down to 4 as more money has come in on the Longhorns.

Alabama (13-0 SU, 8-5 Against The Spread) is coming off an emotional win in the SEC Championship game against Florida.  It was the Tide’s best performance of the season as they crushed the Gators, 32-13, at the Georgia Dome. The Tide took the cash as a 5.5-point ‘dog and money-line backers hit a winner with a plus-170 return (risk $100 to get $170).

Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram was the star of the show rushing for 113 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries. He also had two catches totalling 76 yards, one of those a 69-yard screen pass in the second quarter.  Junior quarterback Greg McElroy came into his own as well completing 12-of-18 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers.

McElroy will need to take care of the football tonight if he expects to win a National Title tonight for the Tide.  McElroy has a 17/4 TD-INT ratio and has completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 2,450 yards on the season. Ingram rushed 249 times for 1,542 yards and 15 touchdowns, averaging 6.2 yards per carry on his season. Through the air, Julio Jones is McElroy’s top target and has 42 catches for 573 yards and four touchdowns against SEC secondaries.

Texas (13-0 straight up, 5-7-1 against the spread) had its hands full against Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship Game. The Longhorns managed a 13-12 win thanks to a 46-yard field goal as time expired. The win didn’t come without drama as Colt McCoy threw an incomplete pass with the clock at double zero.  The Cornhuskers began to rush the field to celebrate the upset, when all of a sudden, a second mysteriously reappeared on the clock. That was all the Longhorns needed. Regardless, Nebraska backers easily cashed as 14 point dogs.

Texas QB Colt McCoy was not on his game that night. He connected on 20-of-36 throws for 186 yards, but threw three interceptions. On the flip side, the Longhorn defense was incredible, limiting Nebraska to 106 yards of total offense.

But we expect McCoy to be back on form tonight.  Barring the Big 12 Championship Game, McCoy has connected on 70.5 percent of his passes for 3,512 yards with a 27/12 touchdown-to-interception ratio this season.  He also has senior wide receiver Jordan Shipley as his #1 target.  Shipley has 106 receptions for 1,363 yards and 11 touchdowns. It won’t be easy for Shipley tonight as he will have to face Alabama’s Javier Arenas, who is one of the SEC premier cover corners.

Now let’s talk trends…During Mac Brown’s tenure in Austin, Texas has been an underdog 16 times and have gone 11-5 against the spread. As for Alabama, it has a 7-1 Against The Spread record in its last eight games as a single-digit favorite. The Tide has seen the ‘under’ go 5-2-1 in its last eight games, while Texas has seen the ‘over’ go 3-1 in the Longhorns’ last four.

Texas @ Missouri – Winning College Football Picks Against The Spread

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

The pros at FiveStarPick.com are looking forward to another profitable Saturday in College Football. The focus of today’s preview is the Big 12 matchup between the Texas Longhorns and the Missouri Tigers.  Las Vegas sportsbooks list the Longhorns as 13-point road favorites with a total of 49.

Texas (6-0 SU, 1-4 ATS) is coming off survival game beating Oklahoma 16-13 in the Red River Shootout. The Longhorns will face another tough test this week  as they head to Columbia to take on Missouri (4-2 SU, 2-3 ATS). Gary Pinkel’s Tigers weren’t expected to contend this year in the Big 12 after losing many key players to the NFL.  However, Missouri got off to a 4-0 start an showed that there is some depth in the Missouri roster.

This will be the third straight ranked opponent for the Longhorns and most bettors believe it will be another victory for Longhorn Quarterback Colt McCoy.  What is interesting is that this year, the Texas defense (246 YPG, 14.7 PPG) is getting all the press allowing only 36 YPG on the ground.  After averaging 36.8 PPG in the first four games, the Tigers and QB Blaine Gabbert have put up a total of only 29 in the last two.

This game is not an easy game to handicap, but the pros at FiveStarPick.com have broken down every stat, trend, injury report and weather forcast on this game to provide our members with a winning play.  Try FiveStarPick.com today for only ($19.99) and see if our talent for picking college and pro football winners exceeds your expectations.  We are the only sports handicapping service in the business that documents our wins and losses, then displays them on our homepage for all to see.  It’s because we have nothing to hide…we just win games against the spread.  Join our family today and start your winning streak tonight.

Fiesta Bowl Picks – Ohio State vs. Texas – Who Covers The Spread

Monday, January 5th, 2009

FiveStarPick.com looks forward to another win tonight as we give our members the ATS winner of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl which features the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Texas Longhorns.  Las Vegas sports books have listed the Longhorns as 8 point favorites with the total set at 51.5.

Ohio State entered the season with a new quarterback, Todd Boeckman. Chris “Beanie” Wells went down with a foot injury in the season opener against Youngstown State and Boeckman fell apart.  To add insult to serious injury, he then lost his starting job to true freshman Tyrelle Pryor.  Pryor completed 63 percent of his passes for 1,245 yards, had 12 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions.  But OSU’s numbers really aren’t that great…Ohio State ranks 105th nationally in passing, gaining just 148.1 yards per game through the air.

Ohio State’s rushing numbers must be off the charts, right?  But beleive it or not, they are only 28th in the nation in rushing by gaining 191.6 YPG on the ground.  Beanie Wells is OSU’s fuel and ranks 7th in the nation with 1,091 rushing yards and eight scores.  What’s more impressive is that he gained all of his yards in just nine games.  OSU will need Wells at the top of his game if they hope to beat the Longhorns tonight.

Texas doesn’t have a very big defensive line, averaging just 273.8 pounds per man, but they’re very fast and can stop the run.  In the 2008 season, they allowed just 73.6 rushing YPG and ranked 2nd in the nation amongst all teams in the FBS.  Texas’ D-Line leads the nation with 3.67 sacks per game and ranks 15th in the country with 7.08 tackles for a loss per game.

The ‘Horns offense will encounter a OSU defense with great fundamentals. Texas ranks 9th in the country in total offense this year by gaining 476.4 YPG. A big reason was Heisman candidate Colt McCoy.  McCoy completed 77 percent of his passes for 3,445 yards and threw 4 ½ touchdowns to every one interception.  McCoy slung the ball a lot to WR Jordan Shipley and WR Quan Crosby. Shipley averaged 12.4 yards per catch this season while leading the school with 11 touchdowns. Cosby caught 78 passes for 952 yards and eight scores.  Quiet the tandem.

This is just the third meeting all time between these college football powerhouses.  In their last head-to-head meeting, Ohio State won as a three-point road ‘dog, 24-7.  The Buckeyes have failed to win or cover in their last two BCS games, but were 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in their first four appearances.  Texas is making its 3rd Bowl Championship Series appearance in as many years.

College Football Pick Of The Day – Oklahoma State @ Texas – Who Covers The Spread

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

It’s Saturday and FiveStarPick.com is giving its members several winners today in college football.  The Oklahoma State Cowboys will be traveling to Austin to take on the number one team in the country…the Texas Longhorns.  Las Vegas sportsbooks have the Longhorns listed as 13.5-point home favorites with the total set at 68.5.

Texas has worked very hard for their #1 ranking.  First they overcame a double-digit deficit against the then #1 Sooners, then they manhandled Missouri and now they’re hosting the Cowboys, ranked #9.

The Longhorns have the 2nd best scoring offense in the country, averaging 48.1 points per game this year and most of the credit goes to Heisman front runner Colt McCoy.  Last week the Junior gunslinger went 29 of 32 for 337 yards and 2 TDs. That’s a 90% completion rating.  Not to mention he is ranked 4th in the country with a passer rating of 190.8.  In additon, the Longhorns have the best scoring defense in the Big XII, allowing just 17.6 points per game this year.

Oklahoma State seems to be having a pretty good year themselves.  The Cowboys are averaging 46.4 PPG this season with both a great passing game and a sound running game.  Cowboy RB Kendall Hunter has already rushed for 955 yards and the Cowboy program is atop the Big XII on the ground, averaging 283.1 YPG.  What’s more, QB Zac Robinson is the ranked 3rd in the country with a passer efficiency rating of 191.9.

Now let’s talk trends.  The Longhorns are 13-1 Straight Up in their last 14 games against Oklahoma State . OSU’s lone win came in 1944.  Texas is 7-3 against the spread in the last 10 meetings.

So who covers the spread in today’s game?  Why not let FiveStarPick.com help you with the answer?  Aren’t you tired of getting cold called by services that tell you about their 750,000 star play that’s a guaranteed winner. Here is a bit of advice…NOTHING is guaranteed when you are betting on sports.  These so called “handicappers” call 500 people on a Saturday morning and give them all a free play; 250 people will get Texas -13.5 and 250 will get Oklahoma State +13.5.  After the game ends, they call back the 250 people who won and pitch them on charging thousands of dollars to their credit cards for more guaranteed winners.   We are not your typical sports handicapping service.  We care about our members and we live and die on every play. Why?  Because we are moving thousands of dollars of our own money on the same plays we give you. Gambling on sports is how we make our living.  Do we win every play?  Absolutely not and we will never pretend to.  Our plays are always posted for all to see, including our losing streaks. But by the end of the year we always seem to have a few hundred thousand dollars of the sportsbook’s money in our casino account.  Let us try and do the same for you.  Join our family of winners today and start your winning streak tonight.

College Football Pick Of The Day – Missouri @ Texas – Who Covers The Spread

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

FiveStarPick.com is entering another unprecendented Saturday of college football and will be giving its members 8 plays today.  The most talked about play being tonight’s game between the Missouri Tigers and the Texas Longhorns.  Las Vegas sportsbooks opened the Longhorns as 7 point home favorites.  The betting public has moved the line down to 4 with the total set at 67.

College Football Pick Of The Day - Missouri @ Texas - Who Covers The SpreadThe Tigers have one of the most explosive offenses in the Big XII, but it got a wake-up call last weekend as they lost at home to Oklahoma State, 28-23.  FiveStarPick gave its members OK State, thank you very much.  Chase Daniel threw 3 interceptions in the 2nd half after having only one pick for the year prior to the Cowboy game.  The Tigers are going to be taking on a Longhorns’ defense that is even faster than what they saw last week. But Missouri uses the Spread Offense, which in the past has given the Horns’ secondary fits.  As a matter of fact, the Texas defense gives up an average 267.8 yards through the air.

Mizzou also has a good defense only allowing 21.3 points per game this season, but their numbers can cut both ways.  For example, look at their pass defense which is giving up 270.5 passing YPG. Texas should be able to throw for major yards against the Missouri D-Backs and Safteys under Heisman hopeful Colt McCoy.  In McCoy’s last outing against the Sooners he proved time and time again that the comeback was possible.  The Longhorns were down 14-3 and 21-10 at different stages of the game, but McCoy completed 80 percent of his passes for 277 yards to notch the victory both straight up and against the spread.  Oh, by the way, we gave our members Texas last week, plus the 7.

Now…let’s talk trends.  In Texas’ last 8 meetings with Mizzou the ‘Horns are 7-1 SU, but the Tigers are 5-2 ATS.  In 2008, Mack Brown’s club has covered the number in all six of their games despite an average spread of 21.
